Feeling ‘Full’ Versus ‘Satisfied’ – What’s The Difference?

Habitual overeating is an assault on your state of fertility. Digestion taxes your system, and diverts needed resources away from reproductive functions. Your cellular pH levels suffer. Your “fertility hormone orchestra” gets thrown out of tune. It brings your immunity to its knees. You get turned into a digesting, detoxing machine. It leaves little to no room for your baby-making function.

How can you tell the difference between eating ‘enough’ and ‘too much’?

Eating so much that you feel “stuffed” sits on the “too much” end of the spectrum. You know your health would be in trouble if you ate every day the way you do at Thanksgiving dinner.

Where’s the “sweet spot” closer to the middle of this spectrum?

Can you recognize the difference between feeling ‘full’ versus ‘satisfied’?

‘Fullness’ is a mechanical sensation, where ‘satisfaction’ is qualitative. I’m sure that you’ve experienced this difference for yourself. Think of any meal you’ve grabbed ‘on the run’ to make sure your stomach wasn’t empty. Now compare this to the deep pleasure you’ve had with meals shared with close friends or family. So much talking and laughter filled you up while the food on your plate lingered.

This is the main reason you should banish ’empty calorie’ foods. The only thing they can do is to make you feel ‘full’. In fact, empty calories can only drive you to “fill ‘er up”. That’s because they provide no ‘satisfaction’ at all. Only nutrient-dense food can trigger your ‘satisfaction’ response.

The more you base your nutrition on ‘satisfaction’, the better your health will be. It’s the zone where your body’s intuitive wisdom shines. Satisfaction guides you to true nourishment. Satisfaction will guide you even better than any nutrition book is able.

Noticing the flavor of your food will connect you to the quality of satisfaction. The first bite delivers a burst of flavor. Then it starts to diminish with every bite. This is actually your body’s way of showing you when your nutritional needs are satisfied. Stay alert at this point. You’ll soon be crossing the threshold from satisfaction to fullness. The key is to teach yourself to notice this subtle feedback mechanism.

To get started, follow these healthy rules of thumb:

  • Begin by drinking a glass of water 10-15 minutes before eating. This is the first step of a healthy digestive function. It sets your body up for ease of digestion and optimal assimilation. It also removes your body’s craving to “fill up” on food when it actually needs hydration.
  • Set the stage for deep engagement with your food. Light a candle; put on some music; set out a beautiful placement, napkin, and cutlery. Even place an elegant wine glass on the table (but forgo the wine for now).
  • Prepare your food as if you are your own celebrated guest.
  • Focus on the sensory aspect of eating. Engage all your senses. Stay in touch with the quality of the flavor in each bite. Follow the sensation from your taste buds spreading throughout your body. Stay attuned to when you cross the threshold from ‘satisfied’ to the beginning of ‘fullness’.
  • Taper the speed at which you eat, remembering that your stomach is only as big as your fist.
  • ‘Wake up’ your senses within this eating experience. Enjoy your surroundings, including conversation or music. Turn OFF the TV, which has the opposite effect of our goal here.
  • Put down your fork between bites, and notice your breathing. Notice how you’re feeling. Are you taking that next bite out of genuine hunger, or mere habit? Are you relating to  your food out of love, or lust? Are you eating what should be tomorrow’s leftovers?

What do you notice as you cultivate this relationship to ‘satisfaction’?

Were you trained as a child to “finish your plate” (mechanical fullness)? Then this will overshadow your sensation of satisfaction at first. Know that you are undoing a deep habit ingrained at the cellular level. Keep watch for any tendencies to “emotional eating”. Those impulses go in the opposite direction of satisfaction-based eating.

Consider this goal of satisfaction-based eating as part of your fertility plan. It is the cornerstone to activating your body’s ability to self-regulatey. Your body’s innate wisdom is superior to anything that your intellect can create. The less you need to ‘micromanage’ your hormones, the better. Leave that to the expert (i.e. your body).

How To Honour the Momma Who’s About To Give Birth

My friend, Kate Varsava, Halifax Birthworker, Wombyn’s Summit Leader and Musician prepares for her own birth in the company of her beloved friends, yogis and fellow birthworkers.  I was so inspired by her tale of being honoured with care, love and beauty that I asked to share her Instagram post with you.

“Yesterday my house filled up. Yesterday I was filled up.

From my bath, filled with warm water, rose petals, and lavender oil, where I was receiving a massage from the loving maiden hands of my sweet friend‘s daughter, I could hear the joyful chatter of wimyn gathering and organizing themselves. I was adorned with a gorgeous fresh flower crown made by my sister, had my hair fixed up, put on my precious jewels…when I emerged from my room, drawn by singing voices, I found my kitchen full of food, my living room full of flowers and ladies (and baby daddy), and my whole house full of beautiful, buzzing, nurturing energy, beaming faces, radiant beings.

I was passed a cup of Guatemalan cacao, sat on a thrown, and treated like a queen. Tender recollections of how we each met, supportive expressions of a belief in me to enter the role of mother, a showering of love to wash me in confidence and fill my heart beyond measure. A feast of the most nourishing foods, a dance party, gifts of herbs and plants and salves, potions, candles, and sacred objects…it was the most dreamy day I could have imagined.

I feel like the luckiest womyn in the world to have community to hold me so, to have a coven sister to organize everyone (I love you so much marapanacci), to now have a freezer full of meals for my postpartum, fresh flowers in every room, art to decorate my birth room, and a heart so full full full ?? Thank you, thank you, thank you to all you gorgeous wimyn and all you ladies sans IG ??

I truly believe that if all wimyn were treated this way by loving community: held up, made to feel strong, cared for, and trusted through their pregnancies and motherhood (our whole lives actually), the world would change, humanity would change, we would all be better off, healthier, and happier.”

Are You Eating A Spermicidal Diet?

Are you eating a ‘spermicidal diet’ without knowing it? In other words, are you following the fads of ‘low fat’ or ‘high carb’? These are direct paths to infertility, not to mention other major diseases. It’s bad dietary advice generally, but especially when trying to conceive.

These fads are the kingpins in the ‘spermicidal diet’. They sound healthy, but create a state of acidosis, which is the opposite of what you want. Doctors miss this basic fertility factor. It’s why they throw around the “unexplained infertility” label so often. Fertility drugs are often prescribed prematurely, costing you extra time and money. Not to mention the side effects! Correcting your fertility diet is a simple and effective solution.

Coffee, carbs, and all forms of sugar will kill your chances at conception. Most ‘convenience’ foods are quite inconvenient for your fertility. Drugs (both prescription and recreational), and alcohol multiply these negative effects. The trappings of the ‘modern’ diet work against your ‘primitive’ reproductive biology.

There’s a long history of food industry lobbyists pushing to get the wrong food advice in front of your face. Beware the health myth of the low-fat diet, and the way that marketing presents the high carb to you. Your job is to tune out this bad nutritional advice, and focus on fertility foods. What the heck! Follow this healthy way of eating for the rest of your life.

“Save the environment!” Your vaginal environment, that is. Conception doesn’t occur if the sperm cannot reach the egg. A ‘spermicidal diet’ makes your vaginal biochemistry inhospitable to sperm. A healthy fertility diet ensures that your “fertility window” will open during ovulation. Testing your pH level every day is an essential part of your fertility regimen. Adjustments to diet and lifestyle are the primary way to balance your pH.

Reverse this acidifying trend in your diet. Focus on good, basic nutrition in vegetables, fermented food, and meats. Tailor the above to your unique body type. Limit high glycemic foods in your diet. You’ll even want to limit fruits, as all forms of sugar can tip the scales.

Make sure your alkalizing practices include:

  • Nutrient dense foods like meats, vegetables, nuts and some berries. Follow either the Weston A. Price diet as a good starting point.
  • Practice “Sequential eating”. Drink water before the meal, and then order your food in increasing density. Remember the traditional order in a restaurant of “Drinks. Soup or salad. Appetizer. Dense main course eaten at the end.”
  • Be sure you drink between 2-3 liters of water per day, and increase depending on how active you are.

Avoid the following acidifying practices:

  • Drugs, alcohol
  • Dehydration (don’t wait until thirsty!)
  • Processed food, fast food, fried food
  • Sugars and refined grains
  • Overeating and emotional eating
  • High carb, low-fat diets

The “Make or Break” Factor of Your Natural Fertility Success : pH Balance

This may not have been your conversational topic over dinner last night. I don’t begin discussions around vaginal pH, either. But, if you’re aiming for natural conception, it’ll become your top daily thought. The sperm and egg cannot meet until the conditions are right.

Are you on good terms with your microbiome? This is the flora and fauna that makes up your gut health. Probiotics are great for creating more life-sustaining organisms in your body. Also, a well-balanced pH helps to preserve it. It has a bearing on your fertility status, as well.

Your vaginal pH stays in a acidic state for most of the month. This is part of your healthy immune function. It ranges from 3.8 – 4.5 during the non-fertile part of the cycle. This healthy range helps to prevent infections of bacterial vaginosis and yeast overgrowth. This is why it’s important to take a probiotic after having been on antibiotics.

Luteinizing hormone (LH) increases during ovulation, which shifts the cervical mucous to alkaline. This lifts the normal barrier of mild vaginal acidosis. It creates a 48 hour window when the sperm has a fighting chance to make it through to the egg. That is, as long as the couple’s pH balance is in a healthy range. If not, the fertility window remains closed.

There are many factors affecting pH, including diet, hydration, and other lifestyle issues. Many couples consume an acidifying ‘spermicidal diet’ due to misguided advice. The emphasis on low-fat, high-carb eating is one of the reasons that infertility is on the rise.

If your pH balance is off, then your chances of conception approach zero. The vaginal environment will not allow sperm to pass. Nor will the sperm be models of vital health, either. This is why pH balance is the very first thing we ask couples to correct on their journey to fertility.

Are You Ready To Reveal Your Healthy Self For Spring?

April 2018 Newsletter

Are you ready to reveal your healthy self for spring? This month we’re looking at the states of mind and the NSOL remedies we prescribe for your timeline events, and also in your Emotional Support Droppers you receive at your initial consultation. In the sound principles of Heilkunst, the diagnosis is wholly linked directly to the cure. The letters stand for the homeopathic remedies Natrum Muriaticum, Staphysagria, Opium, and Lachesis, which correspond directly to states of grief, anger, fear and guilt (shame and resentment).

In allopathic medicine you might be prescribed an antidepressant for the emotional states above, which actually is antithetical to cure. Anti literally means “against” – the depressant being suppressive as opposed to curative. If you take the allopathic (literally “other suffering”) drug away, the symptoms are still underneath. In effect, you now have two diseases; the original disease and now the Iatrogenic (Pharma induced disease) one too.

Spring is a wonderful time to detox both physically and emotionally using homeopathics (literally “similar suffering”). What’s been long buried under the snow or through suppression can now be revealed in the light of day and cleansed, as the warmth of the sun holds us through our process. It’s a coming out party to your authentic self! The resources of herbs return to grow in the long dormant earth, renewed with vigour and nourishment to cleanse our organs of toxicity and anger.

Depending on your specific needs, we can design a physical and emotional cleanse that is just right for you. It has very little to do with the return of bikini season and more about your integrity of spirit housed in your healthy, whole body. We’re ready when you are!
