We recently watched a very illuminating documentary called Orgasm, Inc. It illustrates how a number of pharmaceutical companies are in a race to be the first to bring to market an effective drug for “Female Sexual Dysfunction”. This movie illuminated very well the inherent problem in trying to treat such an abstract condition label, as if it were a singular medical entity, presumably always exactly the same for every woman, and always treatable by the same drug protocol. Furthermore, as with most other false disease labels, this has more to do with marketing, and making more and more women “eligible” for a drug which they may not need, and which often won’t help them.

Something I learned from this documentary, is how it is actually the pharmaceutical industry which proposes new condition labels to be officially approved, so that they can then develop new lines of profitable drugs designed to address these newly made up condition labels. Once the pharmaceutical industry successfully had “female sexual dysfunction” declared a new condition label, they set out to work on developing a new drug which could treat it.

It was upsetting to witness this process in action, and to realize that the whole pharmaceutical industry is built on such a game of artificial construction of condition labels, as a mechanism to develop ever more profitable lines of drugs which largely rob people of their health. Did you know that iatrogenesis (disease which is caused by drugs or other medical errors) is actually the number one cause of death in North America?

The cure for this massive disease of our medical system is to solve this problem of false disease names, by understanding Dr. Hahnemann’s teachings about how to apply curative remedies based on true diagnoses.

Both reactions fall short of the ideal Hahnemann upheld when he developed homeopathy as the foundation of rational medicine. He was critical of close-minded dogmatism as much as he abhorred “blind empiricism.” Originally trained as a chemist, Hahnemann recognized that his use of “dynamized” medicine carried the health sciences beyond the explanatory force of chemistry. Rather than discount his findings or discredit the laws of chemistry, however, he focused his criticism on the over-extension of chemistry, which he found to have “taken upon itself to disclose a source at which the general therapeutic properties of drugs are to be ascertained.”[i] Delimiting the explanatory force of chemistry, he stressed that it may help find the medicinal powers of substances, but it cannot reveal anything about its functions in the human body, which is of a living nature.[ii] He recognized that, as a method originally developed to study inorganic material, chemistry was necessarily limited in its capacity to illuminate living processes.

Recently, a new field has developed in the life sciences, which reinforces Hahnemann’s delineation of chemistry, called biosemiotics. One of its central tenets is that living entities do not interact like mechanical bodies, but rather as messages. That is, living systems always exhibit certain organizational characteristics, which enable them to react to differences in their surroundings, and thus to “create” and exchange information. Without this basic difference between life and non-life, evolution as we understand it, would not be possible. In light of this observation, biosemioticians employ methods that follow the model of semiotics – - the study of signs, symbols, and their interpretation- – rather than applying the chemistry and physics of lifeless matter to processes created by life.

As the science of signs in living systems, biosemiotics invites the medical community to reconsider the physicalist terms in which biomedical researchers have traditionally explained the efficacy of medicine. If we endeavor to not only observe (with statistical precision) but to also understand the ways in which medicine informs the operation of the living organisms with which it interacts, then our explanations must extend beyond the physical laws operative in medicine to the information they introduce to living organisms. Within the biosemiotic framework we can legitimately question whether potentized medicines alter the health of organisms by locally controlling the physical laws according to which a diseased body is operating, a consideration that brings us beyond the limitations of physical discourse and into the domain of language.

First amendment a last priority for some docs

If you’ve ever seen an old re-run of Dr. Marcus Welby, M.D., you probably think you’re watching a depiction of medical care not just from a different time, but a different planet. The homey, personal attentions of Dr. Welby bear absolutely zero resemblance to today’s vast and faceless medical bureaucracy that shuttles patients through the system with all the TLC of a cattle drive.

There was a time when doctors like myself were saddened by the passing of this bygone era. But it appears that the current crop of docs doesn’t share my sentimentality. Case in point… some doctors are now asking patients to sign an agreement that they won’t post negative comments about their experiences online.

That’s right: it’s a gag order to keep patients from letting other patients know that a doctor’s got a crummy bedside manner.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Jeffrey Segal founded a company called Medical Justice to help doctors track and prevent online critiques from the patients. So far, about 2,000 doctors have signed on with Segal’s company.

If patients sign the agreement, they’re promising to refrain from posting any online comments referring to a given doctor’s “expertise and/or treatment.” Medical Justice then monitors the web and removes any online comments that violate the agreement.

If patients decide not to sign the waiver, Segal tells doctors to send them packing.

It’s all very 1984. It’s like agreeing to eat at a restaurant on the condition that you won’t tell anyone what the food is like. And I think it stinks.

Not long ago, I told you about a study of nearly 1000 breast cancer patients which revealed that about half of them said their doctor’s explanation of the condition, its diagnosis, and treatment options was insufficient, incomplete, or difficult to understand. If Dr. Segal’s company has its way, none of these women could pass on word of the shortcomings of these doctors to other potential patients.

In the last few years, the gap between doctors and their patients has widened considerably. It’s almost as though doctors believe that medicine itself has become larger than the people they’re seeking to treat.

Thankfully, some people are still determined to stand up for their rights. John Swapceinski created the web site RateMDs.com to give people the opportunity to anonymously rate their physicians. As you can imagine, Swapceinski has been pressured by doctors themselves and organizations like Medical Justice to remove negative comments — but he’s standing strong.

Doctors are “basically forcing the patients to choose between health care and their First Amendment rights,” Swapceinski correctly points out. “And I really find that repulsive.”

Swapceinski even intends to combat Segal’s Draconian patient waivers by listing the names of doctors requiring these gag orders on a “Wall of Shame” on the RateMDs web site.

AMA President Dr. Nancy Nielsen said that online doctor reviews “should certainly not be a patient’s sole source of information” when looking for a doctor.

Maybe not. But it’s certainly worth taking into account. And it’s certainly your right to do so.

Take a look at the insanity being circulated at our local health department here in Ottawa. This is botched science at its best. The thinking being that if one dose doesn’t work, just give more! Mumps is Back! As you may be aware, the incidence of mumps has been increasing recently throughout Canada, primarily among postsecondary students. There have been outbreaks of mumps in four other provinces, and infections are on the rise in Ontario. In response, The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has implemented a one-time Mumps Catch-Up Vaccination Program by offering free mumps-containing vaccine, called MMR (measles/mumps/rubella), through local Public Health Units.

Four out of five people born in Ontario between 1970 and 1995 have received only one dose of the MMR vaccine, which may not provide them with enough protection against the mumps virus. After a new recommendation in 1996, most children in Ontario received two doses of the MMR vaccine before entering elementary school. To be fully protected from contracting mumps, two doses are required. Ottawa Public Health is encouraging all young adults born between 1970 and 1995 to review their immunization records, and receive a second dose of the MMR vaccine if this has not already occurred. Clinics will be hosted at all postsecondary institutions in Ottawa, and in various community settings, from January to March 2009.

Mumps is a highly contagious viral illness that can have serious and permanent complications. Yes, folks, this is typically the scenario that arises every year. If you listen closely you can hear the Center for Disease Control say, “Whoops, we missed the strain for this year’s flu shot – sorry. Please try to overlook the fact that we’ve poisoned you, unnecessarily. Oh, and sorry also about your babies and your grandparents who also received virus from last year’s flu strain. We now know that it didn’t work this year after all just like the year we also tried to administer the prior year’s flu virus without the Avian flu being contained, and now we’re going to scramble to make another one for 2009 to poison you again with just the right live strain, you’ll see, just so that we can make a ton more cash before March! Try not to notice the anti-freeze and the Mercury being injected into your bodies, those are just the preservatives we use. Statistically, you’d be more likely to avoid the flu if you took nothing at all. So why are we subjected to the flu vaccine media blitz each year?

In Vancouver, a BCTV reporter, commenting on the current flu epidemic that is overloading BC hospital emergency wards, claimed that of 32 people who were vaccinated, 30 caught the flu. Immediately, the news anchor intoned “It is not too late to get your flu shot. The vaccine is 70 percent effective.” [BCTV News Hour, January 11/00]

How does a 93.75 percent failure rate for the vaccine translate into a 70 percent effectiveness? Here is a vaccine with a success rate of 6.25 percent. This is an amazing under-achievement, since the average placebo response to distilled water injections is 30 percent–even to cure chronic low back pain.

How can any drug company manufacture a drug which has nearly five times less of a positive response than virtually nothing at all? How does such a questionable treatment get past federal health regulators?

According to Hugh Fudenberg, MD, the world’s leading immunogeneticist and 13th most quoted biologist of our times (nearly 850 papers in peer review journals), if an individual has had five flu shots between 1970 and 1980 (the years studied) her chances of getting Alzheimer’s Disease is 10 times higher than if she had one, two or no shots.

When asked why this was so, Fudenberg said it was due to the mercury and aluminum that is in every flu shot (and most childhood shots). The gradual mercury and aluminum buildup in the brain causes cognitive dysfunction. Is this why the number of those suffering from Alzheimer’s is expected to quadruple?

Creating herd immunity through mass vaccinations seems to be justified in the name of sacrificing a few for the greater good of the majority. It means people are expendable. Some would call this premeditated murder. This was what the Nuremburg Trials were about after World War II.

People cannot and must not be medicated or subjected to experimentation against their will. It also flies totally in the face of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Vaccines consist of mainly three categories of ingredients. The first are cultured bacteria and viruses. The second ingredient is the medium in which they are cultivated. This may be chick embryo, chicken or duck egg protein, pig or horse blood, dog kidney tissue, monkey kidney tissue, calf serum, rabbit brain tissue, aborted human fetal cells or cowpox pus. These foreign proteins are injected directly into the bloodstream. They are not subject to the stomach’s hydrochloric acid. The enzymes of digestion are absorbed into the blood and carried directly to the liver.

Like insect stings or snake bites, these foreign proteins and other toxic byproducts have the potential for a mild to severe or fatal reaction.

Vaccines also contain stabilizers, neutralizers, carrying agents and preservatives such as formaldehyde, mercury and aluminum. As noted previously, mercury and aluminum are neurological poisons-they accumulate in the brain. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and is used to embalm the dead. There is no safe level of formaldehyde injected into a living organism.

Life After Vaccines

Sweden banned the pertussis vaccine in 1979, considering it both dangerous and ineffective –infant mortality dropped afterward. Sweden now maintains one of the lowest incidence of infant mortality in the world. In 1975, Japan raised the age of the pertussis vaccine to two years of age considering it a danger in infancy. Since that time, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has largely disappeared.

Nations with voluntary vaccine programs such as Canada and the United Kingdom have lower infant mortality rates than the US. Before the 1960s and the move to mandatory mass childhood vaccinations, the US had the second best infant mortality rate in the world. Forty years of mass immunizations later, with a childhood series of more than 34 vaccine mixtures prior to entering 1st grade, the US has dropped to number 24. Why does the wealthiest nation in the world, with all its vaunted health technology and medical know-how, have such a dismal record for infant mortality?

Every year in the US, 12,000 to 14,000 reports of adverse reactions associated with vaccinations–including hospitalizations, permanent brain damage and death–are reported to the Food and Drug Administration. Any drug on the market with a fraction of this record would be recalled in short order. Recent Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine campaigns in the US have coincided with a 200 per cent rise in the incidence of autism. Hepatitis B vaccine alone has been responsible for 25,000 reports of adverse reactions including optic neuritis, brain damage, paralytic polio and sudden death.

There is not an insurance underwriter who will offer liability coverage for drug companies in the event any of their vaccines cause death or disability to the recipient. One would think this should give cause to reflect on the value of official assurances of vaccine safety. Indeed, the US government assumed liability for vaccine damage because the manufacturers could not get insurance. Since 1987, over a billion US dollars have been paid out to compensate only 10 percent of the claimants.

The current effort to make vaccines compulsory world wide will be a license to print money for the vaccine producers and an iatrogenic health disaster of the first magnitude.

Health professionals and others in work situations requiring compulsory vaccines are faced with hard choices. If there is a family history of allergy or anaphylactic reaction, they may be able to apply for exemption on medical grounds. Otherwise, you take your chances with vaccine roulette.
