Natural Birthing; Principles and Remedies

I just recently attended a Womyn’s Summit with about 35 local birth-workers last weekend.  There were Doulas, Midwives, birth attendants, and even a native elder (Sister Morningstar) from Missouri who champions “hands off” births.  Sister told of a beautiful story where she was attending a birth with new Mom with a footling breach who’d just arrived at the hospital.  The babe’s foot was clearly dangling from Mom’s birth canal.  When the woman asked Sister Morningstar what to do, she simply replied,”Hang on to baby’s foot and relax.”  By the time the Emergency Medical team could be summoned, baby was already safely born into her Momma’s arms without the aid of any medical personnelle or even the interfering hands of her mid-wife.

When new Moms come to me in preparation for birth, I typically recommend that they view two movies, “The Business Of Being Born” and “Orgasmic Birth.”  The first one is about how our natural capacity for giving birth out of our own volition has been virtually hijacked by allopathic medicine producing the lowest rates of mortality as a result.  Orgasmic birth is all about remembering why we’re giving birth with our beloved partner and how to use love-making endorphins to ease the birthing Mom’s stress and discomfort in the comfort of her own home.

In my second book, “Unfolding The Essential Self,” I write about the principles of natural labour by telling my own birth story with regards to my daughter born just an easy 10 minutes after dilating.  This after, I was told that a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After C-Section) would not be possible after by son’s horrific birth chronicled here.  Here’s a good reason to consider having your baby naturally at home:

“In an industry where the mortality rate of babes born in hospitals is alarmingly high, especially in the U.S. (Canada comes in a sad second) and especially in babes of racial minorities, it can feel like we’re victims of a medical industry that does not wholly have our best interests, or that of our babies, at heart. The fact that expectant mothers become patients in gowns, encouraged to use a wheelchair and to lie in bed waiting to be put out of their misery with an epidural is thankfully now becoming a thing of the past. Until recently, the options were not so great. Did you know that all women in Canada receive up to eight different drugs (including Oxytocin in their IV drips or in a shot in their shoulder) to encourage contractions whether they want to or not? Most women have no clue that their bodies are being invaded with “poisons” in this way. Birth is not a disease, condition, or illness, and should not be treated as such, especially not without our consent!

Hypno-birthing, doulas, water births, successful breach deliveries, and mid-wives are all terms we women are now championing as we take the fundamental right back to have our babes in the way that is most resonant and congruent for each one of us. In an article written by Jennifer Griebenow on the safety of hospital births versus home births, she was shocked to learn that “a study in the Netherlands done in 1986 on women who were having their first babies showed these results: out of 41,861 women who delivered in the hospital, the perinatal mortality rate was 20.2/1,000. Of 15,031 women who delivered at home with a trained midwife, the rate was 1.5/1,000 (Kitzinger 44).” She goes on to say, “I know, I thought it must be a typo too.” Read it again if you need to. I had to, too!”

Sister Morningstar also shockingly reported that if 4 generations of women have C-sections, by the 5th, the DNA code for birthing naturally will be so altered that the woman’s body of that generation won’t even attempt a natural birth.  In effect, we’ll have de-programmed the body’s cellular memory for this normal biological function right out of our cellular matrix.  The hormones won’t even bother to step up on our behalf.  In fact, it takes a huge amount of concerted and conscious effort for a Mom to actually have a VBAC at all after a single C-Sectioned babe.

This wise woman went on to say that if we’re a culture bent on 100% life births then C-Sections should be championed, however, be aware of the inherent health risks of babes who’ve not had to fight their way through the birth canal to get here.  My own C-sectioned son suffered lung issues, severe colic, allergies, autism, severe behavioural issues and gut dysbiosis alone associated with his birth.  He also suffered the state of mind that everything be handed to him easily as this is what he’d learned to expect.   He could never play on his own, always expecting us to play with him.  He had very big issues with autonomy and struggle until Heilkunst Medicine.

As I’m writing this, I can’t help but think of the story of the Monarch butterfly:

“Once a little boy was playing outdoors and found a fascinating caterpillar. He carefully picked it up and took it home to show his mother. He asked his mother if he could keep it, and she said he could if he would take good care of it.  The little boy got a large jar from his mother and put plants to eat, and a stick to climb on, in the jar. Every day he watched the caterpillar and brought it new plants to eat.

One day the caterpillar climbed up the stick and started acting strangely. The boy worriedly called his mother who came and understood that the caterpillar was creating a cocoon. The mother explained to the boy how the caterpillar was going to go through a metamorphosis and become a butterfly. The little boy was thrilled to hear about the changes his caterpillar would go through. He watched every day, waiting for the butterfly to emerge. One day it happened, a small hole appeared in the cocoon and the butterfly started to struggle to come out.

At first the boy was excited, but soon he became concerned. The butterfly was struggling so hard to get out! It looked like it couldn’t break free! It looked desperate! It looked like it was making no progress! The boy was so concerned he decided to help. He ran to get scissors, and then walked back (because he had learned not to run with scissors…). He snipped the cocoon to make the hole bigger and the butterfly quickly emerged!

As the butterfly came out the boy was surprised. It had a swollen body and small, shrivelled wings. He continued to watch the butterfly expecting that, at any moment, the wings would dry out, enlarge and expand to support the swollen body. He knew that in time the body would shrink and the butterfly’s wings would expand.

But neither happened!

The butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shrivelled wings.  It never was able to fly…

As the boy tried to figure out what had gone wrong his mother took him to talk to a scientist from a local college. He learned that the butterfly was SUPPOSED to struggle. In fact, the butterfly’s struggle to push its way through the tiny opening of the cocoon pushes the fluid out of its body and into its wings. Without the struggle, the butterfly would never, ever fly. The boy’s good intentions hurt the butterfly.”

However, we can help Moms and babes birth more easily, without taking away the experience of having struggled into this world.  In Heilkunst terms, we call this leaving the realm of crude nature and harnessing the principles of refinement.  Here are just some of the remedies in alphabetical order from one of our newest books, “Natural Home Pharmacy for Women” to help you to easily give birth to your own babe, at home, in the company of your choosing, with as littler intervention as possible:

Aconite napellus (Acon.) – For when you feel that you “may

die” and contractions feel like a runaway train and the intensity

is taking your breath away. This remedy can help to mitigate

fear and anxiety so that you don’t feel so restless and agitated.

This can also help baby to resolve shock or fright through all

stages of birth.

Arnica montana (Arn.) – Our paramount remedy for feeling

bruised, sore, and beaten-up during labour. The individual in

this state does not want to be touched. It will help with any soft

tissue damage to the birth canal and perineum, and is one of

several remedies we use in our post-surgery complex.

Arsenicum album (Ars.) – is a chief remedy for anxiety,

restlessness, diarrhea, or vomiting. It is also helpful when mom

can’t let go of the reins and trust her doula or midwife. She may

have a control-freakish nature and just apply the same fear of

losing control of her birth process, anxiously mired in the details.

The mom will also generally feel chilly and perhaps try to go off

on her own in an anxious state. This is the time to set up the

birthing pool with warm water and give Arsenicum, to help with

exhaustion and to ease with transition.

Bellis perennis (Bell-p.) – This is our choice for deep bruising

or deep tissue damage, beyond Arnica. It is useful when the

pelvis is sore from baby’s head coming through or mom has felt

she needed to push too concertedly. This remedy is ideal in the

case of surgery or any fractures.”

Please let us know if we can be of service to your during your birth plan.  We’ve been Skyped in during a birth, and have even done hourly CoRe Bioresonance Feedback sessions to help with Mom’s state of mind during birth. We’re here if you feel that you need a hand or foot!

How Heilkunst Can Solve IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s

images

If you’re reading this, you have our upmost sympathy.  I know from treating folks with IBS, Crohn’s, and Colitis over the last 12 years that when you first come to us that you may be deeply despairing and given up much hope.  Yes, we know about the drugs and the limited prognosis on the allopathic side of the fence.  We also knot the limitations of most alternative therapies too.  Believe me, we’ve lived this too with our own issues. We get it.

Now, I know you want to know what we’re going to do about it.  Well, the answer is multiple and dynamic.  The first thing that we want to know is what is your timeline peppered with in the way of events?  What are the nature of your physical and emotional traumas?  Also, what is your present state of mind?

Did you know that fear of losing control can be a big emotional aspect of this disease matrix?  Of course you do.  Did you know that unexpressed rage, frustration and anger is also a very large component too?  Yes, you secretly have known that too.  Now, you want to know what we’re going to help you do about it, don’t you?  Give me a second, we’re getting there.

Ok, now that we’ve got some of the “state of mind” sussed out, we’re going to recommend basic things like slowly integrating high doses of a broad spectrum probiotics and fermented foods to replenish your microbiome as well as EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids) to help restore the gut and start working on assimilation. Lots of folks with Crohn’s have missed a gut full of healthy bacteria even since birth when they should have grabbed a big gulp of probiotics from their Mom when passing down through the birth canal.  This deficit is a big part of the Crohn’s symptoms picture.  The other aspects is to ensure that you’re getting enough pure spring water, sleep and pristine nutrition, based on your blood type typology, will also be key.

Then, we’re going to provide you a dynamic set of homeopathic remedies specifically for emotional support and drainage and organ support.  One of the key rx, Arsenicum, for IBS, Crohn’s and Colitis will have a description like this excerpt from Dr. Henry Clarke’s Materia Medica.  These are some of the symptoms that we will apply the law of cure for:

12. Abdomen.?Compression in the region of the liver.?Swelling of the spleen.?Excessive pains in the abdomen, principally on the left side, and often with great anguish in the abdomen.?Inflation of the abdomen.?Ascites.?Swelling of the abdomen as in ascites.?Hard bloated abdomen.?Violent cutting pains, cramp-like pains, digging, pulling, tearing, and gnawing in the abdomen.?Attacks of colic occur chiefly after having drunk or eaten, or in the night, and are often accompanied by vomiting or diarrhœa, with cold, internal heat, or cold sweat.?Burning pains with anguish.?Sensation of cold, or insupportable burning in the abdomen.?Pain, as from a wound in the abdomen, chiefly on coughing and laughing.?Swelling and induration of the mesenteric glands.?Much flatulency, with rumbling in the abdomen.?Flatulency of a putrid smell.?Painful swelling of the inguinal glands.?Ulcer above the navel.

13. Stool and Anus.?Tenesmus, with burning in the anus.?Involuntary and unperceived evacuations.?Violent diarrhœa, with frequent evacuations, nausea, vomiting, thirst, great weakness, colic, and tenesmus.?Nocturnal diarrhœa, and renewal of the diarrhœa, after having drunk or eaten.?Burning stools, with violent pains in the bowels, with tenesmus, thirst, worse after eating.?Burning and corrosive evacuations; fæces with mucus, or bilious, sanguineous, serous, painless, involuntary, &c., of greenish, yellowish, whitish colour, or brownish and blackish; fetid and putrid evacuations; evacuations of undigested substances.?Emission of mucus by the anus, with tenesmus.?Prolapsus of the rectum: with much pain.?Itching, pain as from excoriation, and burning in the rectum and in the anus, as well as in the hæmorrhoidal tumours, chiefly at night.?Shootings in the hæmorrhoidal tumours.

The state accompanying state of Mind in Arsenicum, will have a picture like this:

1. Mind.?Melancholy, sometimes of a religious character, sadness, care, chagrin, cries and complaints.?Anguish, driving one out of bed at night, and from one place to another in the daytime.?Restlessness.?Great fear of being left alone.?Anger, with anxiety, restlessness and sensation of coldness.?Anxiety, restlessness, and excessive anguish which allows no rest, principally in the evening in bed, or in the morning on waking, and often with trembling, cold sweat, oppression of the chest, difficulty of breathing, and fainting fits.?Anxiety of conscience, as if a crime had been committed.?Inconsolable anguish, with complaints and lamentation.?Hypochondriacal humour, with restlessness and anxiety.?Fear of solitude, of spectres, and of robbers, with desire to hide oneself.?Indecision and changeable humour, which demands this at one time, that at another, and rejects everything after having obtained it.?Despair; he finds no rest, esp. at night, with anguish.?Despondency, despair, weariness of life, inclination to suicide, or excessive fear of death, which is sometimes believed to be very near.?Too great sensibility and scrupulousness of conscience, with gloomy ideas, as if one had offended all the world.?Ill-humour, impatience, vexation, inclination to be angry, repugnance to conversation, inclination to criticise, and great susceptibility.?Caustic and jesting spirit.?Extreme sensibility of all the organs; all noise, conversation, and clear lights are insupportable.?Great apathy and indifference.?Great weakness of memory.?Stupidity and dulness.?Delirium.?Delirium, with great flow of ideas.?Loss of consciousness, and of sensation; dotage; maniacal actions and frenzy.?Madness; loss of mind (from the abuse of alcoholic drinks).

Now you can start to piece together what happens when we apply the law of nature, like cures like to resolve the underlying cause.  This is only one of many remedies that will typically be used in your case en route to the Genetic Miasms, the root cause for chronic disease, including yours. We will also work on the psyche and the spiritual aspects of why you incurred the disease in the first place, so that you never re-infect yourself with that old state of mind and reinfect yourself.

Perhaps one day soon, you’ll be writing us a testimonial like this one:

“I’ve recently been prompted to return to the Crohn’s/colitic/IBS community by a friend since I’m one of those people that managed to break the vicious cycle of these conditions.

In 1999, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s. My case was severe but not atypical: much inflammation and cramping, fistula, abscess. Instead of acute food sensitivities, my reactions were usually expressed by a bowel obstruction every few weeks. 5 months later I had lost 40 lbs (from 110 lb on a 5’5″ frame). I was non-responsive to all of the meds and diets, the bowel resection confirmed necrosis of the tissues.

I had started seeing a sequential homeopath (Heilkunst practitioner) shortly after the surgery and relapsed 4 months later. I gave up on the meds at that point and chose a 100% holistic treatment. I figured that I had nothing to lose if steroids and surgery were going to get me only 4 months of peace!

7 years later I can say that it took about a year to feel like my life was normal again and another 2 years before I was symptom-free. It was a process, not a panacea. Potent and complete probiotics are key, Essential Fatty Acids and nutritional supplementation to maintain a minimum level of nutrition while assimilation is poor. Good day-to-day nutrition, as possible. Environmental doctors provide IV supplementation, it was certainly a life saver for me.

Believe it or not, I’m hugely grateful for the experience now. I learned so much about myself and the how and why of what made me sick. Now working as a sequential homeopath myself, I’m not advocating abandoning whatever treatment you are following, just trying to say that there is hope and lots of help out there.”

Good luck!

Heilkunst Diagnosing; Where’s That Bloody Off-Switch?

Many of you know that I’ve been on a working and writing sabbatical for the past 6 months.  While I love living like a solitary monk for most of the week, (except for 3 days when I’m on Skype with patients) a couple times a week, I love to go out.  This past Friday, I spontaneously took myself out to the local Thai restaurant for coconut soup, pad thai and the best lemongrass tea I’ve ever had.

The server, and owner, was immediately engaging.  Her beautiful welcoming smile, bright twinkling eyes, petite countenance and forthcoming manner let me know that I was not going to be dining alone, reading my book, for much of the evening.  A Phosphorous Constitution  will come across bubbly, effervescent and all sparkly-like.  They’re so much fun to be with and you will hardly ever feel lonely in their midst.

I knew I was in the presence of a firefly (phosphorous glows green in nature) as I watched this woman flit from table to table. As she came back to tell me how to freeze stalks of lemongrass to make the best tea in boiling water, I noticed my Heilkunst spidey-senses pick up on something  else about her tone.  There was clearly another layer on top of her Phos. nature.

I sat quietly, and curiously, waiting for the signs and signals I would inevitably be brought to render a more thorough diagnosis.  She then asked me where I was from and I let her know that I’m a native of Saint John, New Brunswick.  She then said, “Oh, I’ve been to Moncton.  Not a good trip, though.  I ended up in hospital there for pneumonia!” I heard the little “BOOM” I always hear in clinic when the pieces of a case start to phenomenologically congeal and then lock together.

That was the other piece I was patiently waiting for.  Phosphorous constitutions possess a strong astral, more flighty (literally) nature.  What this means, as per Rudolf Steiner, is that in the body, organs that are a mirror of each other like eyes, lungs and kidneys are related more to the cosmic, airy, astral realm.  A Phos. lives more purely in the moment, with their affinity to the cosmos, they will naturally love to travel, fly, act, play and engage with people in the service industry.  They love lots of change.

If, however, they feel suffocated to fulfill their true desire function, they’ll have a strong predisposition for the Tuberculinum Miasm.  When they feel their dreams dampened (literally) down or suffocated, they’ll engender this disease matrix for which their constitution already has a strong affinity.  They will develop a predisposition for this chronic constant disease and exhibit bronchitis, asthma and pneumonia every Winter.

imgres

Healthy Phos.’ are pure light-bearers but if they get too lodged in the material, physical world, they’ll get water-logged with etheric energy and their lungs will fill up and they will feel as if they’re drowning from the inside out.  This was this other piece that I was feeling as I was engaging with this woman.

I also noticed something else.  Every time my new friend, the server, walked away with a plate in hand after a clear closure in our conversation, she’d stop in mid-walk to turn around to tell me something else.  This happened 3 times, twice, she seemed to correct herself mentally in mid-first-syllable and, as I looked up from my plate in answer, she’d smile and continue to walk away.

The one time that she could not resist the temptation to add something, she chose to  add a tid-bit of information that didn’t really fit the prior conversation.  It was sort of curious and mis-placed. Again, I felt inquisitive as to what this was about.

By the third time, I knew this was no accident.  I recalled the rubric in Dr. Roger Morrison’s, M.D. “Desktop Guide, To Keynotes and Confirmatory Symptoms” and what he said about Tuberculinum in the sections under “Mentals” as, “Constant feeling that he has forgotten something. Returns repeatedly to office door to give insignificant information.”  That was the confirmatory symptom I needed to render a thorough diagnosis.  Both my gut feeling and mind were in agreement.

Hey, wait a minute, aren’t I just a simple woman out on her own for a good meal?  Where is that bloody epistemological off-switch?  That’s the problem with being a Heilkünstler, you can never really shelve that enthusiastic diagnosing tendency.  After so many years, it seems to have a life of it’s own.  Once you’ve readily agreed to ingest that homeopathic red pill, every situation becomes a source of further knowledge.

I knew in that moment, that my new Phosphorous friend with the Tubercular Miasm, was still harbouring this disease matrix.  The underlying cause was still afoot.  Whatever they’d given her at the hospital in Moncton (probably antibiotics which literally means “against life”) only suppressed the symptoms without curing it.  It would come back each year around Dec. 21st, stronger than ever, if the root cause was not addressed on the basis of natural law, like cures like.  I knew this to be true like Neo’s Oracle without the need to bend one spoon.

imgres

I paid my bill and tipped my new Phos. friend heavily, thanking her for her wonderful service and the best of meals.  I will go back to eat there, again sometime, and see if the opportunity organically presents itself for me to share a chocolate chip cookie with her (geeky Matrix reference … what can I say?!).  Phosphorous’ are such beautiful spirits and I hate to think that she might suffer unnecessarily.

Perhaps in my next blog, I’ll share with you an illustration of the Arsenicum woman in my weekly yoga class, who eyeballs me to straighten my mat, a strewn outdoor clothes, and openly tells others how she’s a control freak and hopes the yoga will help her to let go more.  God’s teeth … perhaps it is better if I just stay at home!

Homeopathic Constitutional Types : Arsenicum

The remedy Arsenicum is made from arsenic, which is a metal on the periodic table, and has long been used as a poison. As a poison, it affects the nervous system, and has characteristic burning pains, particularly throughout the digestive tract. Profuseness of sweat, of vomiting, and of diarrhea are common results of being poisoned by it. There is an extreme thirst, which is best relieved by small sips of cold water. During this physiological process of processing the poison, there is an intense feeling of fear which is felt.

Fear is actually one of the keynotes to the use of Arsenicum as a remedy for this phenotypical state. It is a fear which compensates through all manner of control mechanisms – they are the ultimate “control freaks”, who fear losing control as much as they fear death itself. On that note, it can be a very useful remedy to use in palliative care, where a patient is having difficulty “letting go” and accepting that they are approaching the end of life. In everyday life, they have an aversion to being alone, and are driven to always have company in one form or another, as part of how they try to dispel their anxiety.

This is the ultimate fear, but Arsenicum possesses many types of fear, large and small, and for every fear exists a corresponding control behaviour to try to compensate. They are extremely germ-o-phobic, for example, and will constantly be washing their hands, and spraying every common surface in their house with germicidal sprays.

The theme of physical security in the world is an offshoot of this primary level of fear. They can be obsessed with orderliness in addition to cleanliness, and are always compulsively “doing” something and can never sit still and truly relax. The intense neurotic energy they are driven by goes back to their primary fear of death. They are extremely miserly, and compulsively save items “just in case” they’ll come in handy, to buttress their security in the world. This form of hoarding is based on fear for survival and has a different motivation from Natrum Muriaticum, who hoards for reasons of sentimentality.

They are extremely fastidious, and exacting of their environment, and everyone in it, making sure that every detail is planned and accounted for, never leaving anything to whim or chance. On the positive side, they may often be the person who takes control of a situation or project, and makes sure that all hands are working towards the common goal. On the more negative side, they can irritate everyone through their micro-managing tactics, and drown the whole project in a sea of details, losing sight of the bigger picture.

Their fear extends into the realm of health, and they can be quite hypochondriac. As Heilkunst patients, they are frequently phoning or emailing their practitioner between regular visits providing “updates” about every detail, and seeking reassurance that every turn of event doesn’t signal a worsening of their condition. Always being in (the illusion) of control, and being unable to ever “let go” can be rooted in a potty training which was too early, and created a neurotic need to “hold on” for life.

The physical symptoms of Arsenicum affect the gastro-intestinal tract, the mucous membranes, as well as the lungs, which may be prone to asthma attacks. Panic attacks are not foreign to this state. They may suffer from various forms of physical tension and being “wound tight”.
