Contemplation or meditation is about developing the sight of God. It can’t be termed anything else. When we speak of “seeing” as a bodily organ, we are more often alluding to perception or proprioception, discerning the essence of a thing.
When I looked at the sunset in this image , above, I heard the sound of the waves and felt my bare feet in the black volcanic sand. I aimed my camera west at the cascading light of the mountains that surrounded Puerto Vallarta. I also felt culture shock. The image brings back that feeling of thawing from the cold, wet, rain of the west. I drove thousands of kilometres to arrive at the taking of this image that thawed my feelings of shock. When I put on my proprioceptive goggles, I might have discerned some feelings of grief and fear that were in me and in the image. You might relate to that image similarly, sensing my mood at the time or perhaps conjuring up a time when you felt similar feelings.
Vision or being “sighted” has so much less to do with “seeing” than it does with an epistemological event swathed with feelings that are soaked with impressions (feelings, functions and sensations) sourced both from inside and outside our bodies. Reality, as it lives in me, and in you, can be subjective (as in Kantian terms.) We can actually begin to develop an objective science of sight, so to speak, and render those sensed impressions into to a science of spirit: Rudolf Steiner’s epistemology.
In essence, this is the arm of Heilkunst; termed Anthroposophical Science; or the study of man. When we achieve unicity between God and man through our “soul’s seeing.” We can also, then, begin to sort out what is a function of disease and what is health. We can see or more accurately apperceive, discern and diagnose, based on certain qualities of feelings, functions and sensations (the Physician’s response)- trusting more in our inner soul’s function to “see” and apprehend phenomena.
This is why, as Heilkünstlers, we have no issues working with patients by phone. Our organs have been honed over the last twenty years to be able to “see” with all our faculties – not just with our eyes. A change in tone, a sudden in breath, a pause, or even a swallow inserted at the right time will enable us to perceive what we can not see. It feels like a transcendental meditation, adopting the spiritual sight, a departure from ordinary cognition.
In essence, your soul wants my soul to obtain the truth about you, so that you can be whole. It reaches out to me through nuances in symptoms so refined at times that you may not even be consciously aware of them . The soul is entirely intact, and its job is to push discrepancies out into our midst so they can be fully apprehended – their meaning sucked clean from the bone and annihilated. For us, this is the functional nature of the “seeing” phenomena for proper discernment.
Rudolf Steiner states, “Just as in the body, eye and ear develop as organs of perception, as senses for bodily processes, so does a man develop in himself soul and spiritual organs of perception through which the soul and spiritual worlds are opened to him. For those who do not have such higher senses, these worlds are dark and silent, just as the bodily world is dark and silent for a being without eyes and ears.”
In this month’s articles, we speak about eyes and the meaning behind the “ocular” block as per Dr. Wilhelm Reich. Why don’t you take a look and see if you can wholly apprehend the phenomena around the meaning behind “pink eye” and why we don’t always use our eyes to “see” – when we are trying to avoid engaging with something in our lives.
Conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that covers the front of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids. Conjunctivitis is popularly known as ‘pinkeye’ and can be triggered by a cold or an allergy; but if we dig a little deeper we can discern the other sources of irritation in the eye; for example, the emotional root.
As with every physical symptom, there is an emotional etiology. Pink eye is no exception. A condition is not entirely remedied until it is addressed on the mental sphere, not just on the physical level. The meaning is behind it’s expression or you risk a cyclical reinfection. Those that manifest pink eye symptoms will be suppressing the following state of mind as per Michael J. Lincoln’s book, “Messages From The Body.”
EYE PROBLEMS IN CHILDREN
“I don’t wanna know!” They are harm-alarmed about what is happening in their family. They are afraid of the implications and ramifications, and they are tending to use their imagination to conjure up the worst-case scenario. They are not wanting to see what is going on in the family and in their life, because it’s too overwhelming for them. It occurs when there are chronic or situational stresses happening in their family.
“Right and righteous.” They are engaged in an outraged indignation stance of anger and frustration with the “moral cretins” around them. They are not wanting to see what is happening around them. Underneath all this approach is a deeply disturbing questioning of their self-worth. They are the product of wrong-making and judgmental parenting.
RIGHT: “Outraged.” They have a lot of rage at the state of the world.
LEFT: “Fed up.” They are enraged at how they are being treated by the world.
In Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) and Ida Wegman’s book, “Extending Practical Medicine: Fundamental principles based on the Science of the Spirit Anthroposophy” we learn that the eye actually isn’t “seeing” it is a camera. In fact, the brain isn’t seeing in a pure sense. The eye is truly the mirror of the soul, and it is in the soul that we take images and apperceive consciously that which the eye has captured.
Steiner knew adroitly that real freedom can only be obtained through individual spiritual development, gained through scientific study of the spiritual nature of humanity and the universe. He showed that such a path could inspire many cultural innovations in areas such as education, agriculture, medicine, architecture, science and the arts, which are still relevant and progressing today.
In the book, “Managing Screen Time: Raising Balanced Children in the Digital Age” by Edmond Schoorel: “We learn that when we look at something in everyday life, both eyes focus on a single point. In front of a flat screen this cannot be done. In order to absorb the images, the eyes automatically lose their focus and the optical axes assume a parallel position. This is the cause of the typical TV stare. The intentional look that focuses on something in the real world or on a picture is replaced by a way of looking that is determined by the moving image. It is a look without intention.”
Our own Jeff Korentayer wrote at length on the armoring of the ocular block, as per Dr. Wilhem Reich a German Psychotherapist who went on to suss out how the ocular block plays out in one’s character analysis, in his blog post with the same name here (insert link: https://arcanum.ca/2012/09/03/heilkunst-basics-university-3rd-year-armoring-of-the-ocular-segment/) He describes the ocular block also as having a degree of dissociation, “Emotionally, as I’ve mentioned, there is some degree of dissociation, or lack of contact with life and reality.” Reich termed this “contactlessness.”
Now for the Homeopathic Remedies and Bach Flower Essences to consider for the ocular block as per our senior Heilkünstler here at Arcanum Wholistic Clinic, Jeff Korentayer: “In terms of remedies to consider, Opium is useful for the aspect of dissociation, when someone seems to be living in another world. Ruta Grav is useful when there is chronic strain to the eyes, such as working long hours staring at a computer screen. Gelsemium can help when there is a tired, droopy appearance to the eyes. The Bach Flower Remedy Clematis may also be useful for that dreamy, disconnection from reality state. Also, Chestnut Bud may be appropriate where an ocular block has prevented someone from gaining insight from their life lessons and end up repeating the same mistakes over and over. The homeopathic remedy Cannabis Indica is also strongly related to this theme of the ocular blockage, in terms of a dissociation or split from reality. The same is true in various ways of all of the ideogenic remedies.”
One of our chief homeopathic remedies specifically used for Pink Eye is Pulsatilla. Now that you have all the knowledge regarding the dissociative nature of the sufferer, take a look at the physical and mental emotional aspects of Pulsatilla in Dr. Clarke’s Materia Medica. Puls is dying for emotional connection and will whine, cry and be beyond needy if her needs aren’t being met. Over time, if they’re denied their primal needs, they will start the psychological process of disassociating to cope. Pink Eye is an emblem for this deeper phenomenon:
Eyes.?Affections in general appearing on the cornea; margins of the eyelids; dim-sightedness, with a sensation as though there were something over the eye which the patient wishes to rub away; amaurosis; cataract.?Pain in eyes as if scratched with a knife.?Burning sensation, pressive pain as if caused by sand; or sharp or shooting pain in eyes, or else boring and incisive pain.?Burning itching in eyes, chiefly in evening (inducing rubbing and scratching).?Inflammation in eyes and margins of lids (and meibomian glands), with redness of the sclerotica and conjunctiva, and copious secretion of (thick) mucus (and nightly agglutination).?Swelling and redness of eyelids.?Trichiasis in eyelid.?Styes, esp. on upper lid.?Crystalline lens clouded and of a greyish color.?Stye with inflammation of sclerotica, and tensive drawing pains on moving the muscles of the face.?Dryness of eyes and lids, esp. during sleep.?Profuse lachrymation, principally in the wind, as well as in open air, in the cold, and in clear, bright daylight.?Acrid and corrosive tears.?Abscess near angle of eye, like a lachrymal fistula (discharging pus on pressing it).?Nocturnal agglutination of lids.?Pupils contracted or dilated.?Amaurosis; paralysis of optic nerve.?Look fixed and stupid.?Dimness of sight, esp. or, getting warm from exercise.?Cloudiness of eyes and loss of sight, sometimes with paleness of face and inclination to vomit; (all objects present a sickly hue).?Loss of sight in twilight, with sensation as if eyes were covered with a band.?Sight confused, as if directed through a mist, or as if caused by something removable by rubbing, principally in open air, in evening, in morning, or on waking.?Incipient cataract.?Diplopia.?Luminous circles before eyes, and diffusion of light of candles.?Great sensibility of eyes to light, which causes lancinating pains (and in sunshine).
Mind.?[This remedy is particularly applicable for complaints which are found to occur in patients of a mild, yielding, or good-natured disposition; also in those who by, their sickness, or naturally, are very easily excited to tears?they are very apt to burst into tears whenever spoken to, or when they attempt to speak, as in giving their symptoms, &c.?Affections of the mind in general; covetous; mistrustful; absent-minded; low-spirited (H. N. G.)] Melancholy with sadness, tears, great uneasiness respecting one’s affairs or about the health; fear of death (tremulous anguish, as if death were near), care and grief.?Involuntary laughter and weeping.?Great anguish and inquietude, mostly in precordial region, sometimes with inclination to commit suicide, palpitation of heart, heat, and necessity to loosen the dress, trembling of hands, and inclination to vomit.?Fits of anxiety, with fear of death, or of an apoplectic attack, with buzzing in ears, shiverings, and convulsive movements of fingers.?Apprehension, anthropophobia, fear of ghosts at night or in evening, with an impulse to hide or to run away, mistrust and suspicion.?Covetousness.?Taciturn madness; with sullen, cold, and wandering air, sighs, often seated with the hands joined, but without uttering any complaint.?Despair of eternal happiness, with continual praying.?Discouragement, indecision, dread of occupation, and obstructed respiration.?Disposition envious, discontented, and covetous, exhibiting itself in a wish to appropriate everything.?Caprice, with desire at one time for one thing, at another time for something else, either being rejected as soon as obtained.?Hysterical laughter after meals.?Hypochondriacal humour and moroseness, < evening, often with repugnance to conversation, great sensitiveness, choleric disposition, cries, and weeping.?Ill-humour, sometimes with a dread of labour, and disgust or contempt for everything.?Inadvertence, precipitation, and absence of mind.?Difficulty in expressing thoughts correctly when speaking, and tendency to omit letters when writing.?Giddiness; patient neither knows where he is nor what he does.?Great flow of very changeful ideas.?Nocturnal raving; violent delirium and loss of consciousness.?Frightful visions.?Weakness of memory.?Fixed ideas.?Stupidity.
The last aspect to be addressed is the family dynamic. Why is the child suffering dissociation? If the parents aren’t able to fill the need for connection in the child, then why? Where have their needs been compromised? What do they need to fully actualize this primal longing to solve their own ocular block?
Connection through the eyes begins at birth. Healthy babes who are born in a serene, relaxed environment without the insult of eye drops will look for their Momma, crawl to the breast up our tummies and latch on to our breast; making eye contact from moments after birth. Skin to skin warmth and the way our Mom returns that look of connection becomes the foundations for a healthy life of ensouled apperception.
We will come to know, in deeper gnostic terms, a safety, love, care, desire, and true container for our healthy unfolding. This is the launch pad for our wholeness and grace, our anchor to our ALL, the wisdom of our philo-sophia from which to explore our world by tiny increment. If Mom turns away with guilt (insert blog on Lachesis here) or she’s overwrought with other responsibilities (insert blog on Sepia here) she will feel unavailable to the baby.
Our job as Doctors of Heilkunst is to plumb the depths of the whole phenomenon, leaving no therapeutic rock unturned. Otherwise we miss a Divine opportunity to resolve the essence of our human suffering. We’re well beyond just throwing an allopathic medicine at the symptoms. We deserve so much more than that.
It would be easy to tout facts such as 80% of sedentary American adults watch 3.5 hours of television a day. I could also describe how 92% of all Americans have a television set in their home which consumes more than half of their available leisure time. These facts are fairly well known.
However, a study done at the National Cancer Institute where 221,000 active individuals between the ages of 40-71 years of age still showed a predisposition to heart disease and cancer where T.V. was a 3-4 hour daily habit. This may not be such common knowledge. Also, did you know that chronic television watching is linked to incidences of diabetes, obesity, influenza/pneumonia, Parkinson’s and liver issues as well?
Now, if I open the pages of Michael J. Lincoln’s book, “Messages From The Body” and review the reasons for a few of these diseases cited above, you might perceive the link to how watching television precipitates the state of mind before the disease manifests on the physical level. Here are excerpts from Lincoln’s book from each section specified:
Cancer – “Powerlessness-rage.” They feel overwhelmed and devastated, with a sense of intense emptiness in their life. There has been many years of inner conflict, guilt, hurt, grief, despair, resentment, confusion and/or tension surrounding their deepest personal issues. It is connected with feelings of hopelessness, inadequacy, helplessness and self-rejection. They see no possibility of relevance or effectiveness from the Cosmic realm. They have disharmonious attitudes towards parts of themselves that they don’t want to deal with.”
Heart Issues – “They are not expressing and manifesting love with others-now and/or before. They operate out of scarcity assumptions and the belief in constricting limitations. They tend to judge themselves a failure and therefore work furiously to accomplish on the job and to dominate others. They are full of tension, anxiety, resentment and suppressed aggression. Underneath, they are frightened children full of regrets, sorrow and remorse for a life wasted and a “vast wasteland” experience. They are the product of highly judgmental and demanding parenting that never gave them the message that they were good enough.
Diabetes – “Boulevard of broken dreams.” They are longing for what might have been in their life, and they are in a state of emotional shock. They have a deep dissatisfaction with their life and an accompanying self-dislike. There is intense sorrow and a sense of starving to death in the midst of plenty, of being surrounded by most of the things that have meaning without their being available to them. They have a great deal of despairing desperation, depression and demoralization. It’s a “. . . but not for me” attitude that is often accompanied by a fair amount of feeling very sorry for themselves. There is no sweetness left in life for them, and there is insufficient joy in their life.
Our predecessor, Rudolf Steiner, was a Goethean scientist who spoke liberally about stages of development in seven year cycles. He cited that when a child is first born, they’re most focused on physical development. It takes a lot of internal, mineral, forces to grow a body from its total dependency on Mom and Dad to be able to first sit, then crawl, run and then at 50-70 pounds at age 7, dribble a basketball with any kind of coordination.
From the ages of 7-14, Steiner speaks to how we are more etherically developing our capacity to receive impressions. This is the time in our development when we’re naturally and resonantly ready to be engaged more with art, story (fairy tales and putting on plays), music, eurythmy (a type of rhythmical, dance-like movement mostly found in Waldorf Schools), creativity (watercolors, drawing, sculpting, etc.), hand-work (knitting for metabolic limb coordination), sport (healthy competition) and fully actuating our imaginal forces through the etheric body.
From 14 to 21 we develop our astral bodies through actualizing our desires, goals, dreams through fantasy and socialization. This is when we experience the onset of puberty and hopefully a healthy unfolding of our sexuality. However, “Waldorf educators saw a direct link to this astral body and the watching of television. The scenes, the lack of imagination involved, and the topics covered on most channels would obviously bring on the astral stage of the body at an early age from the outside in. This was one reason that television was banned from Waldorf schools. Modern researchers, however, have just recently made this connection when they recently announced, “Watching Television may Quicken the Onset of Puberty” (Dr. Laura Markham, 2006).
In Markham’s article, based on 35 different research studies she states that this connection has a lot to do with the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain, which plays a key role in regulating the body’s internal clock. Light emitted by television screens suppresses melatonin levels in the blood, which disrupts sleep patterns of children and teens as well as the age at which they enter puberty. It is also interesting to note that the problems of early-onset puberty have baffled researchers since 1950. This was the same date in which televisions became widely owned in the United States.”
On one Waldorf school website from Ireland they state, “Television, as well as film, videos, DVDs, recorded music, computers and electronic games have a very powerful effect on children. It can take several days for the effects of a single video to wear off. If children are watching every day, the effects never wear off at all; many children now speak a lot of the time in ‘cartoon’ voices, make ‘sound effects’ to accompany their jerky movements (kicking, punching) and compulsively repeat lines from videos they have seen over and over again. This is now seen as normal childish behavior, but it really comes from these media, not from the children themselves.” I once served an Autistic child who could “script” word for word every Disney movie she’d ever seen!
The other consideration is that we need time in order to process impressions as our thoughts go through a cycle of maturation. Watching television inhibits this natural process. Steiner stated that, “What is learned more slowly at any given age is more surely and healthily absorbed by the organism, than what is crammed into it.” (Spiritual Ground for Education by Rudolf Steiner).
This is also why homework is not promoted in Waldorf education, to give ample time for a child to wholly integrate all of the art, story, plays, music, and movement they were engaged with from the inside out to settle down into their etheric mind (where memory is stored) during the remainder of waking consciousness into the sleep consciousness.
They will wake the next day full of reflections from the day before, having crystallized their impressions into thoughts. Children become sick, first mentally and then physically if this natural rhythm is not allowed for, given that the externalized impressions will override this capacity for thinking. The child’s head, instead, will be filled with images from video games or television. Once again, his own concentration and imagination will have been denied him. He’ll deem that life occurs, out there in T.V. land, not internally in his own world of self-actualized and fructified dreams. The application of a properly threaded Will (male gesture) and Wisdom (female gesture) will be hobbled.
The other problem is that if we’re told at allopathic schools that there is little room for the bubbling up of our internal creativity and that we have to succumb to standardized testing instead, we will begin to feel the light go out on our internal capacity for imagination and freedom of expression. A generalized malaise, and “why bother” attitude starts to show up. It might even lead to suicidal depression in our teens. I know because I serve teens brought to me for Heilkunst Treatment in this state more often than I’d like.
These external dumbing down forces start to spread into the rest of our lives. The why bother gesture begins to permeate everything to the point where a sufferer opts to live externally, watching others live, fulfilling lives through their externalized perpetual fantasies, while the watcher sits on the sidelines and simply watches or controls a gaming console. It becomes a lot less risky to live life on the sidelines physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually if we’ve repeatedly gotten the message that what we’d like to contribute is not wholly valued.
I serve so many of these checked out children and adults, that it is astounding. It is an Aurum (homeopathic rx for the loss of one’s inner gold) state, in which they’ve forgotten their inner value. They’re not connected to their true heart’s desire (heart disease) and their lives feel profoundly un-lived (cancer). In many cases, they don’t even know what they’d like to be anymore, either in the present, or later on when they grow up, as they’ve not even thought to ask themselves this question anymore. They’re utterly resigned. T.V. perpetuates dissociation, escapism, a disengaged onlooker society. The video game and pornography industry is also counting on this physical, mental and emotional inertia of the watcher on the living room couch with his bag of cookies or chips.
Onlookers over time are numb, shut-down and not very resourceful. Perfect if the government, in cahoots with Big Pharma, want to be passing bills for mandatory vaccinations through congress without folks knowing or caring. No, you won’t see that on CNN or allopathic news. That content is only peppered liberally through my personal Twitter stream where my ire is completely provoked to write books and articles about this insidious phenomenon. #vaxxed #cdcwhistleblower Sometimes I actually wonder if there is still anybody out there?!
In Heilkunst Medicine, we also discuss at length a Chthonic, fear-induced state entitled Bufo. In nature, Bufo Rana is a big, meaty, overgrown toad with big slobbery lips and a quick tongue. He sits for hours, unmoving, staring at a fixed point in his environment, barely blinking waiting for a juicy fly to pass by, otherwise he is sedentary, conserving his cold reptilian energy, seemingly unaffected by his ambient. In the human disease state, you’ll observe these characteristics in addition to symptoms of lasciviousness, lewdness, lustfulness, and wantonness. They’re almost drooling as they can’t wait to get home to watch pornography and attempt self-gratification in the basest of ways in private. I’ve served many modern men, and women too, in chronic Bufo states.
I’ve also known two men in my life who were chronic T.V. watchers. One of them watched the news on a popular station from sun-up to sundown. He also developed a tumor the size of a grapefruit in his gut, breaking one of his ribs. He never knew it was there until Doctors noticed it while examining him for a hernia.
A second individual I know retired some years ago and watches a variety of sitcoms, news and documentaries day in and day out. He leaves his house on a very limited basis, living mostly in fear of the outside world. He takes a variety of drugs for depression and anxiety. His pallor is ashen. I can’t help but wonder if his chronic television watching is contributing to his problems.
I also serve individuals who have chronic problems with memory. They have difficulty recalling where they put their keys, issues with dates, times, people’s names, etc. Again, it would be interesting to wean them from television, in addition to Heilkunst Treatment, and see if their etheric memory increases.
As you can see, television is a toxic, mind-numbing and disease inducing machine. It infects you and your family with its agenda, which represents less than 1% of reality. If you travel the real world, as I do, you’ll realize that 99% of the population is so loving, helpful and compassionate, perhaps you too will forget the violence and fear proffered by television.
I’ve not had television in my midst for over twenty years for the precise reasons that I’ve illustrated above. Living without it means that I get to live my own creative, thought-provoking and imaginative life, full of juicy impressions and healthy desires. I’m a photographer, an artist, a romantic scientist and a philosopher. I get to write books, serve patients and compose blog articles based on my own generative impressions, fully taking the time to ruminate upon ideas as they crystallize into articles. I love my over-the-moon fulfilling life and I feel that T.V. would only detract from desire to know myself and others in a deep and meaningful way.

Just like any topic in Heilkunst medicine, solving vision issues is wholly dynamic. Right out of the gate, I typically tell patients that those cones, rods, and lenses found in your eyes are really just the most advanced optic camera fashioned by the most masterful craftsman imaginable. To study the eye, and our capacity to see, is to behold with wonder the full majesty of nature encapsulated in our own nature.
Doctor William Horatio Bates (1860 – 1930), New York ophthalmologist, and author of the book, “The Bates Method for Better Eyesight Without Glasses,” cited that the accepted way that we view the function of vision is inherently skewed. The indoctrinated thought that still prevails today can be sourced from Helmholtz theory that the ciliary muscles deep within the eye actually control the thickness of the lens, merely accommodating vision.
Doctor William Horatio Bates (1860 – 1930)
Bates recognized that the lens being the main “accommodation” for the enabling of vision is in fact not accurate. In fact, folks with cataracts and people born without a lens can still unexplainedly see clearly. He further deduced that the external eyeball muscles were actually responsible for the lengthening and shortening of the whole eye in its front-rear axle. If you think of the mode of action of a camera or set of binoculars, you’ll be closer to the truth of the eye’s true functioning.
Rudolf Steiner actually surmised that you don’t in fact “see” with your eyes. He went on to state that you also don’t actually “see” with your brain either. He suggested digging deeper into vision as a soul function. The reason he came to this conclusion is that you could have two identical twins who grew up in the same family who witnessed precisely the same events, but perceived colours, light, and actions totally differently.
Our experiences go through many emotional lenses to arrive at proprioception based on feelings, functions, and sensations. This is why it is so difficult to get consistent details from “eye”witnesses. So much of our human experience is brought to bear on “how” we see as a function of how we’ve been ensouled.
Wilhelm Reich spoke about health and our capacity to see truths, not as a function of our armouring or sexual stasis, but our truer healthy ability to remain wholly relaxed in our bodies. Through the liberation of rage, grief, fear, guilt, and resentment, we can “see” our lives more clearly. We can in turn also navigate others from this more relaxed state with kindness, love, compassion, and devotion.
Dr. Bates also spoke about how important a relaxed state is in seeing appropriately. “In Bates method, the ability of passive and dynamic relaxation is the first and basic technique improving the vision. By relaxation, I mean not only the general ability to relax the muscles, but also the relaxation of mind which is a condition for the process of vision to occur. In many cases, the relaxation techniques used by Bates turned out to be sufficient for the improvement of sight.”
The need for glasses indicates ocular armouring as per Wilhelm Reich. Armouring can be sourced from our conditioning, past traumas, Genetic Miasms, and/or belief structure. I know this is true as my own grandmother is 89 and has never worn glasses. Her pragmatic, appropriate, down to earth, and relaxed way of being has enabled her to retain 20/20 vision throughout her life thus far. It is a state of true balance and grace to be able to see clearly well into our advanced years.
I recall when I first came to Heilkunst treatment, I was sitting in the passenger seat being driven to work along a parkway that ran along the Ottawa river. It was fall and the leaves were first starting to change. There was a first hoar frost etching the leaves as the pink of dawn rose over the car behind me. I recall that I was suddenly impressed with the breadth and depth of hues and tones of the foliage of the trees.
Had I never seen such distinctions in colour before? Why was the vibrancy hitting me so profoundly? How had I not noticed the depth of gradation in each individual leaf and tree that made up this kaleidoscope in majesty of colour before? It felt like I was seeing nature in her ultimate glory for the first time. I was literally moved to tears with a deep love and compassion for this vision and the feeling of grace it conjured in me. That moment changed the trajectory of my life.
Since this time, we’ve helped many patients have the eyes to see. Based on all of the pieces above, we’re able to suss out a treatment protocol sourced from principle. In some individuals, it will be that they can solve much of their vision challenges by drinking 2.5 litres of water per day and increasing sleep (with blackout blinds), ease, rest, and relaxation.
Others do best from a combination of Dr. Bate’s exercises including palming – eye calisthenics using an eye chart by covering one eye at a time and reading the letters just as you would during an eye exam, and my favourite; looking way out into the vista to the farthest point possible and then back to a specific word in a book.
Most folks work on a computer, looking predominantly close up which means that over time, the muscles in the eyes will shorten. Although I am working with patients over long spans of time, I always work in front of a window with a phenomenal view of nature and water. I will look up from the Skype screen, periodically, to enable my eyes to look far out at the furthest point allowing my eyes to be flooded with natural light and impressions.
When I met my fellow Heilkünstler husband, Jeff Korentayer, he wore thick glasses like the bottom of Coke bottles. His eyes were magnified by his lens at least 3 fold. Dr. Estelle Saunders, a Bates Method supporting opthamologist in Ottawa, where we lived, suggested Jeff use the above exercises while also going through his own Heilkunst treatment to address the Genetic Miasms that had severely affected the vision of much of his ancestral family.
Through diligent work, using the Bates Method, breathable contact lenses (glasses actually inhibit the range and scope of one’s vision), and the decrease in lens prescription strength every 6 months, Jeff obtained an increase in vision by over 6 points. He can now wake at night without an ounce of concern for tripping over the cat enroute to the washroom.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), a natural therapy modality that speaks to neurological patterning, touts how our eyes will access memory by looking up to the left or down to the right, for example. This is a necessary function for our capacity for recall. If one is limited by bifocals or small framed glasses, memory will be inhibited as eyes won’t generally cross the barrier outside the frames to see more clearly. They’ll remain restricted within these parameters.
So many of our patients will cite how much better their recall and memory function has increased when they strengthen their capacity to see. Like me, their vision will be greatly enhanced in the most dynamic of ways, soaking up a broader spectrum of impressions through the capacity for this ensouled function. My goal is to be just as ocularly able at 89 as my beloved Nan!
