I had another brand new patient explain to me yesterday, “You know, Dr. Ally, I’ve been putting off starting treatment with you because I was afraid you’d make me give up my use of Cannabis.” I smiled at the other end of the Skype line as I looked into his eyes. I saw both his courage and his shame vying for space on his face. I thought how beautiful he is to be able to admit such a thing to me after knowing me for less than an hour. He’ll use that courage, I ruminate.
“Actually,” I respond in the usual way, “I would encourage you to continue with your normal usage as if we’ve not met or spoken today. You’re not going to give up something until you feel something juicier emerge and rise up in your life to displace the drug use. I’m pretty confident that as your self-love, creativity and joie de vivre leaps forward through Heilkunst Medicine, you’ll naturally put more and more time and space between yourself and your vices. I’m also pretty sure that the drug use isn’t the only addiction you employ in your life.”
The patient looked back at me with shifting eyes, however, and now I could see the fear. I acknowledged, “I know you’re afraid. You wanted me to tell you to get off the drug for your health or Heilkunst won’t work, but you’ve been bucking false authority your whole life and you wanted to put me in the position to be precisely the same archetype for you telling you what to do. You’d only rebel against this, so I won’t be that person for you. I want to plumb a different relationship with you, letting you know that either way, I’m not attached to the outcome.”
I see him take a breath before I continue,” You see, I can’t just meet that old expectation. We both know that a true, permanent cure is not an outside in phenomenon. It naturally comes from the inside out. Yes, I will start the process of detox for you by putting the homeopathic remedy ‘Cannabis’ into your ‘Drainage and Organ Support Dropper’, however, it won’t be me ultimately picking up that bag of pot, rolling the joint or choosing to smoke it or not. A reinfection with the drug is entirely your own choice. However, I will send you a few resources for you to look over regarding the longer term effects are of pot on your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health are.”
Now he was looking at me like a curious child, the fear had ebbed, “Ok, I will just try and take it day by day and see if I can try and avoid my habit.” I knew he was having trouble with the concept with the number of “trys” he’d used in his sentence, “Actually to reiterate, I don’t want you to apply your will to quit or diminish just yet as you don’t yet trust yourself. It’s ok, it will come. If you try to quit now, you’ll probably not succeed, and you’ll feel like crap, a failure again, beat on yourself and that is the last thing we want at this juncture. That is an old, karmic pattern, my friend, and it is that loop that we need to jimmy you out of first.”
He smiles, “I can see that you have trust that I can change. Why does that scare me so bad?” I feel a tears rent at the back of my eyes, “Because, Love, you’ve not felt a huge number of self-marshalled successes to date in your life. So your inner trust and faith is a little tarnished. I know because this was also true for me too. Way back awhile ago, I was just like you. I was you. I used to live to eat, now I eat to live and I’ve cultivated a life so full of self-love, beauty, connection and creativity that food no longer has the same pull for me.”
“Wow,” he exclaims, “Thanks for sharing that. I just assumed that since you treat others that you’ve always had your shit together.” I think, ‘if he only knew.’ As I look at the homeopathic prescription I’ve created for him thus far, I ask him if there is anything else he’d like me to help him detox from and I tap the keys of my computer in answer, “Coffea, Alcoholus, Tabacum, Arsenicum, Sacc. Alb., Nat. Mur., Nux Vom.,” for his other addictions to coffee, alcohol, commercial tabacco (which contains arsenic) on rare occasions, sugar, salt and I add Nux the homeopathic helper for addictions. I add all this to his Drainage and Organ Support Combo. dropper and feel a sense of completion in that realm.
His Emotional Support will have remedies for nurturing (mother’s milk) and self love (increasing his inner value), along with some carefully chosen Flower Essences which I know will gently shift his mind from lack of self-honour to a greater sense of grace. I will also look forward to addressing his timeline of emotional and physical traumas as this will decidedly get the chronic (tonic) diseases out of the way, naturally providing him with more free will.
As we finish up, he lets me know the session wasn’t as daunting as he thought. I smile wide and let him know that he did just great and that I’ll get his remedies off to our pharmacist later this afternoon and that they’ll be shipped out to him tomorrow morning.
I also let him know that he can call my office anytime and I’d be happy to connect with him should he need before our next follow-up session in a month’s time. I consciously radiate love and care towards my new patient and hold in my mind’s eye his perfect transformation with ease and gentle, but illuminating, healing reactions.
I see his future, healthy, effulgent self come more to life, animating him with new possibilities. He’ll find his inner and then outer connections. He’ll be more potent with his choices and subsequently carry them through. I see it in this new connection I’ve made with this other human being on his evolutionary path to greater freedom, his path to cure.
Attachment Parenting: is the latest buzz-term amongst natural parenting advocates. At Arcanum Wholistic Clinic, we’re big proponents of attachment parenting which includes wearing baby in a sling by day and, by night, nursing on demand and co-sleeping or bed-sharing. Parents of various native tribes around the world raise their babies this natural way. When baby is born, it takes months (possibly even a year or more) for him to realize that he’s actually a separate entity from you and so he prefers as much of a womb-like existence as possible in order to thrive, with constant doses of warmth, comfort, nurturance, sustenance, and a clean habitat.
Bowen, Massage, or Chiropractic: are great modalities to help with sleep. I’m a Bowen Practitioner and can attest to how many babes lose sleep due to a misalignment from the birth trauma, affecting literally the way their head is screwed onto their neck and shoulders. I’ve done minor soft tissue releases on babies and had parents report that baby sleeps soundly from then on. At home, you can rub your baby’s feet with coconut oil before bed, helping baby to relax and promote digestion, along with releasing any withheld gas that can cause baby to have a sleepless night.
Aromatherapy: is very helpful as mentioned in prior sections. One drop of lavender oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil (such as coconut oil) works well for massaging baby’s feet. You can also use the same ratio for a humidifier, vaporizer, or diffuser.
Cherry Pit Pillow/Pack: is an old European household remedy for colic and sleep. You can buy these small pillows from eBay or look for them at a reputable eco baby supply store, where more natural methods of healing are promoted. Simply heat it on a pan in the toaster oven for 10 minutes to heat up the cherry pits. When placed on baby’s belly, the cherry pits release a soothing, moist heat, helping bubbles of gas to diffuse.
A Wool Soaker: is a great way to help baby stay dry from a leaky diaper during the night. Sheep’s wool is designed to keep the rain from permeating to the animal’s skin through absorption, while the lanolin closer to the skin prevents the water from reaching the epidermis level, acting like a natural rain repellant. The company “Pooters Diapers” states, “When baby’s diaper becomes wet, the wool soaker wicks the moisture away from the diaper by absorbing it. Lanolin … keeps the urine from leaking back out of the wool …”. Baby is more likely to sleep through the night if her clothes stay dry and more comfortable.
There is typically a reason for baby to wake during the night. As his parents, it is up to you to go through a mental checklist to determine why this is. Co-sleeping babes do best with an easily accessible breast for nourishment and comfort. Most moms learn to sleep through baby’s latching on to the breast and subsequent drifting back off to sleep. Occasionally, baby will be wet and need to have a diaper change before sleep can be restored.
When baby is 4-7 months, teething can be the issue as he matures. A nightmare or night terror can be the cause for his waking. At other times, it can be due to the fact that there is a full moon! Here are some safe homeopathic remedies to use for specific issues. If this doesn’t help, it’s because there is a deeper issue, like vaccines or a genetic miasm (inherited predisposition to disease) in the way, preventing baby from getting a deep, restorative sleep. Let us know if the latter scenario is the case as we bring years of training to be able to solve the root cause of baby’s ills, so that you can all sleep like babies!
Aconite: is a great remedy for when baby has been exposed to a dry northeast wind during winter, aggravating a high fever of even 105 degrees Fahrenheit, along with an earache. Baby might be just fine upon going to bed, however, he wakes shrieking around midnight, clearly in pain. Look for restlessness, dry body heat, and increased thirst. Baby may be writhing in pain with extreme sensitivity to touch, suffering burning or even violent pain.
Arnica: is a good remedy for when baby seems to have his internal clock mixed up; drowsy without being able to nap during the day, but able to sleep during early evening and then wakens with a hot head at night, with fear that he will suffer pain again. Older children will complain of feeling exhausted upon waking with terrible dreams about animals, death, and even mutilated bodies. During sleep, children who need Arnica will groan, murmur, talk, snore, and pass stool and urine involuntarily after having toilet trained.
Belladonna: is one of our chief remedies for right sided earaches and for waking violently with pain and high fever at midnight, as mentioned in the prior section. Baby will be restless, agitated, and typically screeching in pain. Belladonna with solve this state outright.
Chamomilla: is a great remedy for fussy babies who need to be constantly rocked or nursed to sleep. Look for right-sided earaches, red face, a more low-grade fever, around 102 or 103 degrees Fahrenheit. In a Cham. state, baby will give you the impression that there is absolutely nothing you can do to appease her as she’ll reject absolutely everything that you offer, pushing it and you away.
Coffea: is derived from coffee. In homeopathic terms (like cures like), an over-stimulated baby needs a stimulant to calm down. I used to keep a tin of organic coffee in the freezer for my own children to take a wee sniff from. Actually, I still have the same tin at my office (I don’t drink coffee) for babes I see in person who are suffering an over-stimulated melt-down. All I do is open the lid of the tin of coffee in my office and watch for baby, and mom or dad too, to take a couple of whiffs of the aroma. Within a couple of minutes, baby is completely calm, gurgling, and usually drifting off to sleep. If you’re nursing, you can take the homeopathic remedy to promote sleep for your baby as it transfers through the breast milk. We will never recommend drinking coffee while breastfeeding as in this volume, you’ll actually create the opposite result by aggravating baby’s delicate nervous system and making them wired on caffeine with disastrous sleep results.
Nux Vomica: is for what I call the jack in the box syndrome. It will seem that you just get baby off to sleep and he keeps popping awake all night long for no rhyme or reason, like he’s woken by the least noise or movement. In proper ascending potencies, Nux. will also help detox baby’s organ system of any prior medications or antibiotics should the situation arise, helping baby sleep more soundly.
Medications, and vaccines, administered at birth can play havoc with baby’s central nervous system and digestive organs, making it difficult for him to settle properly into sleep. Nux. is one of the remedies we use when clearing the actual drug nosodes from baby’s system based on natural homeopathic law. A nosode is the homeopathic term for the remedy made from the exact drug administered, taking “like cures like”, or the similimum, up to “exact cures exact”.
Pulsatilla: is a great remedy for right-sided ear infections, as mentioned above, with a more low-grade temperature around 103 degrees Fahrenheit. Your baby will be profoundly clingy and needy with a desire to be carried everywhere, consoled, and kissed, but is less capricious and contrary than the Chamomilla state described above.
Flower Essences for Sleep
To help yourself and baby to sleep, we recommend Bach’s “Rescue Sleep” and “Rescue Sleep Liquid Melt”. I recall certain stressful days with my own baby where I was still measuring my own sense of self by how many things I was able to tick off my list. Being attached to certain outcomes with an infant or toddler creates a sure disaster. When children out number the parent or parents, you’re bound to be pinioned under your children’s expectations over and above your own. This is just how it is, for now. It will get easier, but for now, you answer solely to your child’s needs, dropping most of what you desire to do or find fulfilling. You’ll get back there.
Often, when I had a yearning to do something, or I had a deadline, or place to be by a certain time, I would be rendered a high-strung anxious mess by the time bedtime came around with unresolved feelings of failure that turned up as left-over anxiety, resentment, or even anger from the day. I learned first hand that this is a disastrous state of mind to try and put a baby down to sleep, when I was feeling electrified with unresolved impatience. I’ve often referred to infants, babies, and toddlers as being the canary in our adult coal mines, picking up on every miniscule bit of angst, mirroring every bit of it for our not so pleasurable viewing. They will literally torture you with your own mirror.
Bach’s Flower Essences, including Walnut, in the case I just described above, in addition to the remedies below, can help you and your child calm, relax, and let go to sleep; enabling you both to face another day with refreshed eyes, letting go the unnecessaries, focusing more on simply “being” than “doing.”
Here are the remedies contained in “Bach’s Rescue Sleep” Remedy, captured right from their website:
White Chestnut: To help ease restless mind.
Star of Bethlehem: For trauma and shock.
Clematis: For the tendency to “pass out”, and unconsciousness, being ‘far away’ and not present mentally.
Cherry Plum: Fear of mind giving way, verge of breakdown, anger.
Impatiens: For irritability, tension, and fidgety.
Essential oils, or aromatherapy, for baby is safe provided you stick to the oils recommended in this book and use them according to the dilution that we’ve suggested. In the early evening, I used to prepare a warm bath for my baby (be sure to use only natural cleansers for baby’s tub!) with a drop of lavender. Usually their dad did the bathing as this was their time to connect and give me a moment to clean up the kitchen after supper, or to just sit and have a moment to orient myself in the world, to make note of some grocery items needed, or to just ponder my own feelings with some chamomile tea and my journal.
After baby was out of the bath, their dad would give them a baby gentle massage over their little bodies, putting them on the floor while they lay on a cotton receiving blanket or on their changing table. I taught him how to always massage baby’s belly in a clockwise motion to encourage the release of gas bubbles and good digestion, by following the large intestines natural route to the rectum. When massaging baby, the pressure should be about the same as you would use to rub your eye-ball when your lid is closed. This is a good way to remind our stronger, more burly hubbys what the pressure should be. Baby will love the wonderful time to bond and relax through touch with their daddy.
Massage Oil Blend
1 drop of Lavender
1 drop Geranium
1 drop Roman Chamomile
and 30 ml of Sweet Almond, Olive, or Coconut Oil
Blend all of the ingredients together well, using on babies 3 months and older. As mentioned above, you can use a drop of lavender or chamomile in their bath with some raw goat’s or cow’s milk to help promote sleep. I would also wear lavender oil on my own clothing or skin while nursing baby before bed. I still do this when a cranky baby comes in for a consultation with their mom, to promote comfort and security for both of them.
I’ve always used essential oils in a room diffuser, vaporizer, or even a pot of steaming water that a child can not reach. One drop of lavender, Roman chamomile, or geranium in about 3 cups of water works well.
Excerpted in part from our new bestselling book on Amazon:
This blog is part of a series; its original title was Heilkunst Basics : Grade Five
One of the first things that people associate with health is the concept of detoxification. It goes without saying that our modern, industrial world has added many toxins into our environment, which adversely affect our body and organs to one degree or another. There are specific locales which offer a greater or lesser load of environmental toxins, and to the degree it is feasible, people may choose to move their life to a better environment.
Regardless, it is always necessary to some degree to regularly focus on necessary detoxification at various levels. Some sources of toxins include:
Chemicals (natural or man-made)
Toxins in food (from pesticides, or other by-products of the food production chain).
Toxins which we generate internally, such as from mental or emotional processes
Following many of the suggestions in the blog series preceding today will help to minimize your taking on of toxins. In a typical process of Heilkunst treatment, specific detox remedies will be used, in conjunction with “drainage” remedies – these target the optimization of specific functions of all of our organs of elimination, including the skin, kidneys, bladder, liver, and so on.
In addition to this generalized approach, I also make sure to address any toxins which are specific to the patient’s workplace or general environment. This may also include any prescription drugs which they are currently on, and which they can use help to keep their body on top of its detox job.
One common source of major toxicity which many people are still subjected to is the existence of mercury-based dental amalgams (ie the “silver” looking fillings in the mouth), which leech more and more mercury into the blood and brain as they age. There are a few biological dentists who are much more aligned with the principles of natural health, and who are competent to change these over in a safe way. We have a sequence of homeopathic protocols which assist the body to continue effective detoxing of mercury as well as other general toxins during the procedures.
As Arnica was the first remedy representing the cold stream of the Chthonic Realm (at the level of the physical body), Baryta Carbonica is the remedy for blockages related to the etheric body, which is the locus of all life functions and processes. You could say that it is an inversion of the themes in the chthonic remedy Stramonium, which is the more extroverted form of the types of fears expressed in Bar-c. The picture that comes to my mind when I think of the essence of this remedy is of a bashful child hiding behind their mother’s skirt. This is an image which portrays both the deep shyness of this remedy, as well as the state of emotional dependence.
This is a remedy which is useful for any number of conditions which involve some form of developmental delay, including the various forms of autism. Delays at any level can be helped with this remedy, including physical, mental, or emotional. Likewise for adults whose process of growth was halted at a certain life stage, where you get a palpable sense that their mental or emotional maturity is still frozen at an age much younger than their chronological one. As with any remedy, this can be true at very subtle levels, which may or may not be discernible in any given case. This is especially true with this remedy, which has a core fear of being laughed at, or ridiculed, and will often work out one or several means of “covering up” their core vulnerability.
Bar-c is useful for any physical delay in development, such as in children who seem to fall to the bottom of the statistical growth charts for their age, in terms of height, weight, or other developmental milestones. Early diagnosis of autism, for example, is defined in terms of identifying children who do not achieve characteristic milestones by certain chronological points in their development.
The Sean Penn movie I Am Sam portrays the Bar-c state quite accurately. It is a story of a mentally retarded father, who is fighting a custody case with the State, who is threatening to take his daughter away on account of his mental age being about age 7. His lawyer, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer, is a great illustration of the phenotype Nux Vomica, as she is a hard-driving career woman who has alienated herself from her own son. The theme of “all you need is love” runs through the movie, and Sam melts the icy heart of this lawyer, and many people around him with the purity that only a child could muster.
There are two homeopathic remedies which are largely similar, as they are derived from the same plant : Coca and Cocaine. I am presenting them together in this blog post, as from an ideogenic point of view, they touch on the same theme. Coca is the remedy potentized from the leaves of the coca plant; while Cocaine also originates from the leaves of the coca plant, it is much more processed, and its effects much more intensified. The leaves of the coca plant have traditionally been chewed on by mountain climbers as a means of preventing altitude sickness. This gives us a big hint as to the core theme of the remedy revolving around fear of heights and fear of falling.
As we saw that Cannabis has a strong cultural affinity for the Hippie movement (based on a strong similarity in state of mind), Cocaine has a cultural affinity for the state of mind surrounding high-powered executives, as well as the players in and around Hollywood film production. Both of these situations relate so strongly to the theme of Cocaine, as they involve acts of incredible human capacity, where much is risked in order to achieve high returns. A Hollywood star can rise to the top just as quickly as he or she can fall to ruin, and the dynamics and pressure of this are embodied in the remedy state of Cocaine.
There is also a similarity here to Nux Vomica, which is a state driven by the false ego to achieve their worldly ambitions, and will burn themselves out in the process. Cocaine is the ultimate “performance anxiety” remedy, where the projected success of the ego is seen as a gigantic task, and which can produce all forms of anxiety and tension as part of the means to get there. Cocaine is used medically as a local anaesthetic, which is analagous to all of the pains which needed to be dulled as someone forces themselves to climb “to the top”. It never ceases to amaze me how there are no accidents in terms of which drugs tend to be used by which groups of people, based on the unconscious drive to match one’s internal ideogenic state with a crude form of the similar medicine.
Although I’ve portrayed this state in a particular way, it is not only applicable for high-powered executives and Hollywood types, but in anyone who has taken on this state of mind in their own situation. I use the more extreme examples, as they very vividly portray the theme of the remedy, but always keep in mind that any state of mind can exist at much more subtle levels in everyday life. The issue of separating out the ambitions of our false ego from the true objective desire of our Self can be helped with this remedy in whatever form it has taken.
The key feeling of Nux Vomica is of thwarted ambition. Ambition is something which is derived from the false ego, and drives us to accomplish things which are not derived from our true self. Such pursuits are bound to lead us into conflict or stress of various kinds, and the need for a constant recharging of energy which peters out just as quickly.
The Nux Vomica phenotype is very hot-headed, with an explosive temper, which bursts out at anyone or anything they perceive to be in their way. Their perception is that everyone around them is moving too slowly, and when in the role of a boss, they will bark out orders and reprimands in a usually colourful palette of language.
They behave in a highly competitive way, and make very poor sports who can’t stand losing. This is true both at work as well as their “leisure” time, where winning is everything. They act overly confident, even to the point of arrogance. They are very impatient, and will break things out of frustration, such as smashing their computer keyboard when a page on the internet is loading too slowly. Small or large examples of ‘road rage’ are rooted back to the energy of this remedy.
They are attracted to the use of all forms of stimulants in order to keep themselves propelled forward, but then will hit a point of collapse sooner, or later. The famous, and tragic, examples of Elvis and Michael Jackson illustrate this pattern of being reliant on drugs and cycling through these great highs and lows in the name of “the show must go on”. All forms of caffeinated beverages, especially including coffee, are the general fuel for this underlying energy behind most of our modern working world, which participates this Nux Vomica energy, even if not in full-blown form as I’ve described in the paragraphs above. Many prescription or street drugs may be used as stimulants in this state. Nux Vomica is the ultimate hangover remedy, and should be served at every New Year’s Day breakfast.
The physical pathology of Nux Vomica affects the gastro-intestinal tract, including symptoms of spasms and cramping. They can suffer a form of constipation which has unproductive urging, and mirrors the underlying feeling of this state, which is a compensation for “wants to, but afraid they can’t”. Many symptoms of Nux centre around the nervous system, which is highly charged, as in “my nervous system is fried”.
