The Root Cause of Dental Issues

[This post is from the February 2020 newsletter – click here to read it.]

Open your mouth, real wide, wider! If these words cause you to tremble in your boots, why not engage with preventative medicine? We’re all about helping you to avoid the dentist as much as possible, with easy regimen that helps you to remineralize your teeth for a lifetime of healthy teeth and bones.

Between certain types of foods and supplementation, we want to avoid root canals as much as possible, as we know that they have further reaching implications with regards to your overall health. For example:

  • Root canals are done on dead teeth, opening a nerve highway that can become one of the worst sources of chronic bacterial toxicity in your body.
  • Dr. Weston Price spoke extensively on the dangers of root canals and how the diet of primitive cultures can help prevent/solve the need for root canals.
  • The truth is that dental pitting or cavities reflect deeper, systemic — meaning “whole body” — illness that should be addressed wholistically.
  • In partnership with your Heilkunst Physician and your Biological Dentist, you can have a more comprehensive and wholistic solution to your whole health and not just try to stick a band-aid on your teeth.

We’ve been helping folks remineralize their teeth, address inflammation, and solve the root cause (intentional pun) of their dental issues for over 15 years –  all naturally. This month’s blog articles are designed to give you more information on how to stay out of the dentist’s chair. See more in this full article here:

When Will We Know? Observations On Forced Education

“circle of friends” by Valentina Powers

Rudolf Steiner, Spiritual Scientist, and founder of Waldorf Education and Anthroposophic Medicine cites that children can’t in fact subsume, in a healthy fashion, reading, writing or mathematical concepts until well after the milk teeth have fallen out. The idea being that if you wake a child too early to intellectual machinations, you damage the fine tuning of their etheric (creativity and absorption) and astral (artistry and inspiration) integration.

In this over-intellectualized and mechanistic epoch in which we live, one of the greatest crimes I see in healthcare is over-intellectualized adults who struggle with accessing all of their organs for knowledge. They’re just not properly integrated! This produces anxiety and neurosis on a large scale as their capacity for trusting their inner guidance system (gnosis) has been tarnished due largely to the tyranny of forced education.

Parents who live in fear that their child won’t be able to compete in this global culture unless they’re bullied into unfolding their egghead processes early on, actually destroy their child’s innate capacities to become lifelong learners, something which ought to be borne as a self-inspired, inside-out gesture. Real knowledge has never been a successful outside-in game and never will be. You’ve heard the maxim, “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”

A natural curiosity is the stuff of health. It propels us from the Godhead of our ordination as human beings (not human doings) otherwise as children we’d never ask questions like, “Why is the sky blue?” If this innate desire is squashed, and replaced by government curricula and unproven homework that turns parents into hateful enforcers instead of advocates and protectors, we destroy a child’s delicate intuition.

When will we come to wholly trust, and have faith, that each of us will ask the questions – from an internal fount whose source is beyond our comprehension – that will propel the answers towards us? When will we come to the understanding that as we progress through our spiritual unfolding, our nuanced capacity to know will flow and ebb with each consciousness soul phase we blunder through so that we’re married to the functional purpose that evolution pours through each one of us?

When will we know that the gesture to bully and shove round pegs into intellectually limiting square holes is on its way out and that feminine wisdom is mounting a luminous trail so self-sustaining and rejuvenating that the silos of patriarchy are being revealed, and breaking down at an amazing rate? When will we know that the desire to “know thyself” is so flipping compelling to each one of us that its intrinsic nature is something to be preserved, not browbeaten or terrorized with ridiculous tests.

When will we preserve the essence of our innately curious being-ness as wonder-filled seekers?

When will we know?

Weaning; When It’s Time To Let Go of Breastfeeding Your Babe

There can be a variety of reasons that a mom will orchestrate the timing of stopping breastfeeding.  In some cases, she will feel that it is “just time,” or that she needs to reduce feedings in order to head back to work, or the babe is now deriving more and more nourishment from sippy cup and solids.  In the best case scenario, baby initiates the cessation process.  My own time to wean came when my daughter could systematically undo my blouse buttons and I just intuitively felt that she had everything she’d needed from me in the way of physical and emotional nurturing.  It was instinctual.  It was time to let go.

Sometimes the transition to stopping breastfeeding can occur earlier under less desirable circumstances such as chronic mastitis  (although we have remedies for this!) or because not enough milk is being produced (we have remedies for this too!) and mom has to supplement baby’s feeding from other sources like raw goat’s milk (goat’s milk has a smaller molecular structure than cow’s milk and can be easier to digest for baby) from a reliable source or implement Weston Price formula.  Trying to get pregnant may be another reason that a mom will commit to the process of stopping breastfeeding.

Rudolf Steiner modelled Waldorf education after an organic unfolding of the human spirit illustrated by his pedagogy that allows for the teaching of human history at the time our human physiology is ready for it.  For example, before a child’s milk teeth fall out, their abilities to conceptualize can be harmed with forced reading, math or science.  Also, children at the age of ten are ready to unfold the Greek epoch in their microcosmic cellular memory of our human consciousness.  He also suggests that babes who are breast-fed beyond fifteen months also start to pick up on the mother’s karma and disease heritage to a degree that may limit their capacity for full autonomy, freedom and sovereignty later on.  This is derived from his extensive medical lectures for young Doctors.

All that being said, when your baby is ready to wean, stopping breastfeeding, is really an intimate decision taken between mom and babe.  As your beloved child starts to sit up on his own he may develop an interest in other people’s solid food as early as six – eight months or not until closer to a year or even more.  Slowly introducing cooked egg yolk, liver, avocados, puréed fruits and vegetables and salmon and a sippy cup with healthy raw goat’s milk (pasteurized milk has been linked to allergies and can contain unwanted pathogens and antibiotics) can be a good way to start transitioning your babe off the breast and gradually stopping breastfeeding.

Ideally, with ample time and support from our partners, you can slowly scale down feeding slowly by 1-2 per week depending on your baby’s individual needs.  At 14 months, I was still able to lovingly provide my babe’s nursings first thing in the morning upon waking, evening when I got home and dropped the groceries on the kitchen floor while Dad prepared supper and then again at night-time before bed.  Cold turkey weaning is never recommended due to the emotional and physical shock for both mom and babe.  It takes time for your milk supply to abate and for baby to adjust to solid foods without promoting digestive colic, constipation or emotional distress.

Also, moms have found it best to provide that new sippy cup in a new location like a high chair or on demand from the floor, or a low-level coffee table, so that babe doesn’t confuse the usual rocking chair, where the nursing position would have been assumed for nursing, with the new regime of stopping breastfeeding.  If you need a leg up, we have homeopathic remedies that can help with weaning naturally.

  • Usual reasons for transitioning:
    • Mom going back to wor
    • “It’s time”, in terms of maximum benefit being achieved
    • Sometimes the transition is forced before desired, due to reasons of employment, or sometimes other reasons the mother is having a hard time breastfeeding (chronic mastitis, for example)
    • Trying to get pregnant – There is evidence that breastfeeding does decrease a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant
  • Signs the baby maybe ready for transitioning
    • teeth
    • can sit up on their own
    • a growing interest or curiosity in other people’s food
    • satisfied and not asking to nurse
  • Transition methods
    • Gradual elimination of number of feedings per day, without reducing the amount of cuddling/emotional connection
    • Don’t give the new sippy cup (or whatever) in the same location that the breastfeeding was normally done
    • no cold turkey (shocking)

Good Oral Health; How To Stay Out Of The Dentist’s Chair

The Issues

Dental issues can be complicated to treat. Like most issues in the body, they’re dynamic in origin. Our own Biological Dentist, Dr. Farid Shodjaee, takes a very holistic approach. He does Craniosacral Therapy and he’s also married to a Homeopath who we trained with. His approach to mercury removal is second to none. For the patients we share in common, he leaves it to us to clear the dental trauma and properly chelate mercury after removal, using Heilkunst principles in addition to ‘Drainage and Organ Support Protocols’.

It is Allopathic Medicine that compartmentalizes the body into separate treatment departments. In our world, the Osteopath needs to be talking to the Dentist, or you fall short on the overall treatment of the patient. For example, if there are caries (cavities) and pitting in the teeth, this is indicative that there are also bone issues. It takes about eight different types of calcium and other minerals to effectively grow teeth AND bone from the chalky center out to the shiny enamel on teeth.

While we can fill a tooth with some porcelain composite, (never mercury puleassssse!) the root cause has not been addressed and will show up in other ways in future. It is important to not only supplement with whole, organic foods and bio-available minerals, but suss out why the body isn’t absorbing those minerals in the first place. Band-aid solutions are not sustainable and never address the root cause of the issues.

Fluoride is a known neurotoxin and actually causes pitting and cavitation in teeth, as well as concrete, so it is strongly recommended that it not be used in any form. It is interesting that in our Materia Medicas, fluoride “disease” causes excessive materialism and subservience. From that perspective, it makes sense why the powers that be may be interested in keeping it in our city water supplies.

If there is inflammation at the level of the gums causing highly toxic anaerobic bacteria, traditional dentists will often suggest a root canal with a round of antibiotics. I’ve had moms contact me in a panic when a dentist wants to perform this highly invasive procedure on their child! The problem is that by destroying the blood supply and roots to the teeth, you contribute to other diseases eventually coalescing in the body in the future, given that the teeth are functionally connected by nerves to every organ in the body.

 Anatomy of a Tooth

Your teeth and bones are made of the hardest mineralized substances in your body. In the center of each bone and tooth is a pulpy chamber; this is a soft, living, web-like structure full of blood vessels and nerve endings. The roots of each of your teeth descend into your jawbone and are held in good stead by a periodontal ligament.

There are 3-4 of these ligament canals contained in each tooth that, as mentioned prior, extend literally for miles within your body. Actually, 3 miles to be more precise! Dr. Weston Price identified as many as 75 separate accessory canals in a single central incisor (front tooth). This front tooth alone is connected to the pineal gland, nose, ear, pharyngeal T., pharynx, frontal sinuses, sphenoid sinuses, kidney, bladder, genitals, anus and supported the watery domain in the body.

Surrounding the pulp chamber is a harder cellular layer termed the dentin. It regularly secretes a hard mineral substance in order to keep your teeth in good standing right up to the layer of enamel. It is important to supply enough minerals to the physical body in order for it to constantly support its capacity store-hold for regeneration.

Below is a dental chart by Dr. Daria M. Brezinski. If you review it closely, you’ll quickly figure out those drilling, extractions, root canals, etc. have further reaching implications on the auricular meridia than most people know; pull a tooth or kill its roots with a root canal and now you’ve destroyed the symbiotic relationship between your tooth and the organ it was helping to mediate. It’s all connected!

Photo by Dr. Daria Brezinski “Dental Chart”

In the case of a root canal, for example, when the tooth is hollowed out, and the webbed chamber filled with guttapercha (dental composite), it not only cuts the tooth off from its blood supply, but severs its relationship to the corresponding organ and body part. This symbiotic relationship is now destroyed. The organ left hanging, dangling without its inherent anchor, is cut loose like a kite without its string.

The maze of tiny tubules and the bacteria housed within are now cut from their source of nourishment and are laid bare to receive infectious agents. Think about it, in a healthy non-root canaled person, the bacteria typically enters the mouth, past the teeth and onto the cilia at the throat that mobilizes it for breakdown by the gut as per the immune function. If you’ve had a root canal, you’ve now got dangling tubules exposed in the mouth where there is no barrier to the organs by viruses or bad bacteria. They’re laid bare!

The defense mechanisms supplied by the immune function are now rendered defunct. Most viruses or bacterial arch nemesis are filtered out in the mouth, as mentioned, mobilized by the cilia in the mouth, before they can get to an organ. The teeth are there not just to chomp and grind down on your food-stuffs, but the enamel and dentin are hardened sentinels employed also to protect the tiny tubules, nerves, and ligaments from transmitting these errant bacteria directly to your vital organs down through these canals.

The Problem

As per Dr. Mercola, “As long as your immune system remains strong, any bacteria that stray away from the infected tooth are captured and destroyed. But once your immune system is weakened by something like an accident or illness or other trauma, your immune system may be unable to keep the infection in check. These bacteria can migrate out into surrounding tissues by hitching a ride into your bloodstream (or tubule), where they are transported to new locations to set up camp. The new location can be any organ or gland or tissue.”

Dr. Weston Price was able to transfer diseases harbored by humans to rabbits, by implanting fragments of root-canaled teeth. He found that root canal fragments from a person who had suffered a heart attack, when implanted into a rabbit, would cause a heart attack in the rabbit within a few weeks.

He discovered he could transfer heart disease to the rabbit 100 percent of the time! Other diseases were more than 80 percent transferable by this method. Nearly every chronic degenerative disease has been linked with root canals, including:

  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Arthritis, joint, and rheumatic diseases
  • Neurological diseases (including ALS and MS)
  • Autoimmune diseases (Lupus and more)

There may also be a cancer connection. Dr. Robert Jones, a researcher of the relationship between root canals and breast cancer, found an extremely high correlation between root canals and breast cancer. He claims to have found the following correlations in a five-year study of 300 breast cancer cases:

  • 93 percent of women with breast cancer had root canals
  • 7 percent had other oral pathology
  • Tumors, in the majority of cases, occurred on the same side of the body as the root canal(s) or other oral pathology

Dr. Jones claims that toxins from the bacteria in an infected tooth or jawbone are able to inhibit the proteins that suppress tumor development. A German physician reported similar findings. Dr. Josef Issels reported that, in his 40 years of treating “terminal” cancer patients, 97 percent of his cancer patients had root canals. If these physicians are correct, then there is a huge link we’re not wholly apprised of between our teeth and the health of our whole human bodies.

Dr. Shodjaee will never remove mercury from a patient’s mouth without proper damming or oxygen irrigation. Also, he never will remove mercury from both sides of the mouth at the same time for this very reason. A good Biological Dentist understands the importance of these meridians and the body’s dynamic connections.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We know that our soils are deplete of minerals, which means our foods are also in turn deplete, which means that if we follow this bunny trail right on down to our organisms, we’re also deplete. Difficult dentition in children is like an epidemic with amber teething necklaces selling out their supplies.

However, a child with enough minerals on board will hardly ever drool or cry in pain. This is an indication of a shortage in bioavailable minerals, the building blocks for healthy teeth and bones, the superstructure of the physical body. For ourselves and with our own patients we supplement regularly with bio-available minerals using the following:

We use the laws of nature like cures like to address chronic constant diseases that form barriers against your capacity to absorb minerals. We can also deal with inflammatory issues until the root cause can be annihilated using Heilkunst principles. There are way too many remedies, both pathic and tonic, in addition to using the sequential approach, to outline here going well beyond the scope of this article.

Therapeutic Education:

As per Michael J. Lincoln’s book,  Messages From The Body,” the reasons for tooth issues are:

No more putting off.” They are being forced to deal with their oldest unresolved issues that span many lifetimes. The area involved is that of responsibility, and as a result, they lack vitality and aggressiveness, due to their great conflict about it.

There are two possible scenarios involved here:

Indecisiveness.” Problems in this area are being reflective of long-standing inability to come to decisions that is due to an inability to break things down for analysis and choice-making. They are prone to be undisciplined in their attitudes and expression, and they are manifesting negligence in their life-management. They are systematically power-avoidant, responsibility-deflecting, unambitious, assertiveness-suppressing, and lacking in determination. The resulting build-up and sudden release of “Reggie the Raging Room-Wrecker” frustrated rage-outs are one of several processes by which they are therefore unsuccessful in money matters and intimacy. They simply have no idea what the principles of truth and right action are. The pattern is the resultant of a systematically power-derailment, competence- undermining, and responsibility-deflecting possessive parenting pattern involving interference-running, do-for-ing, under-requiring, or demoralization- and immobilization-induction.

Immobilization.” They are experiencing overwhelm reactions, due to feeling compelled or required to take on responsibilities that are in effect way over their head. They tend to “bite off more than they can chew”, in terms of their capacities and motivational structure. As a result, they are being inundated with requirements and felt accountabilities. They have not developed or they have lost the ability to set priorities and boundaries, and they are caught up in a “parent-rescue” psychology. It comes from their having long-standing essence guilt around past life patterns of irresponsibility, coupled with being expected to be the “family hoist” and to “make things all better.” When these expectations were far too much for them to handle as a child, they became targeted for much accusation, attribution and guilt-shame-induction,as if they were the cause of all their family’s problems, and as if they were cosmically required to “atone for” and to “make up for” all they have “caused.”

My hope is that you have a better overview of dental health from a wholistic perspective and that you’ll be inspired to take the health of your whole organism back from any deleterious matrices that have caused you harm. If you’ve had a root canal already, much can be done to prevent the conditions and diseases mentioned above from plaguing you later on. If you have any questions regarding the information contained herein, don’t hesitate to comment below. We love to hear from you.

“A great resource, empowering parents with confidence and understanding to support their precious babes and young children at what is a traumatic and stressful time. The combination of homeopathic remedies, Flower Essences and Essential Oils offers many options for calming a sick and fearful child. Many of the remedies are helpful for a variety of different ailments. The remedies are Safe and Natural treating illnesses which are in themselves necessary for building a child’s strong immune system. It importantly links emotional disturbances in a child’s well-being, such as grief over loss of a loved one or bullying, to illnesses such as headaches and tummy aches. It asks us to observe closely our child’s behaviour to accurately match the remedy.

The author brings her own experience of raising her children with these remedies. For me that is the clincher!! I want these remedies in my first aid kit for myself and my family and will share this new knowledge with others with young families.

In my work as a RIE Associate with young parents I’m aware of so much fear and confusion around how best to care and protect our precious babes from vaccination to antibiotics.  Here is a resource which practically sets out the nature of early childhood illnesses, their causes and tried and true natural solutions. We know that over prescribing of antibiotics has enabled superbugs to appear that are resistant to antibiotics. There is acceptance of the part suppressed emotions play in developing disease. Natural Home Pharmacy For Children promotes strengthening a child’s immune system and discovering the underlying causes of illness rather than suppressing the symptoms and compromising the immune system.

Your passion and commitment to share your research and experience with empathy and humour in an easy to read style for parents of all ages is welcome and vital to our understanding of how to treat ourselves and our families naturally.”

Maureen Perry,  BA, MPhil and Dip Tchg (ECE). BA in Sociology, MPhil in Economics and Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood Education, RIE Associate with Resources For Infant Educarers.

“Allyson McQuinn’s passion for natural therapies is articulately reflected in this remarkable book. It explained in detail about the use of Homeopathic remedies, flower essences and essential oils in treatment of various medical conditions faced by children such as fever, cough, aches, teething troubles, etc. I strongly recommend ‘The Natural Home Pharmacy For Children’ to everyone interested in natural cures.”

“Just to let you know how much I’m enjoying your new book!! I so wished I’d had it when my children were young and even now if we have any grandchildren!! I will definitely recommend to people I know who have young families. It is so empowering and practical with many of the remedies repeated so they become essential in a first aid homeopathic kit!! You are a wonderful author!! So easy, enjoyable (with anecdotes/personal experience) and interesting to read!!!!”

“A book of this nature is long overdue!  I will be relieved to recommend it to my clients, as it shows what is appropriate treatment for children when they’re sick.  Drugs are NOT appropriate, and are responsible for much of the suffering now commonplace in childhood–eczema, asthma, allergies, sinusitis, acid reflux, recurrent middle ear infections…. There’s no denying that more and more children are chronically ill.  This book is an important first step in getting your child off drugs and onto a safe path, I wholeheartedly endorse it and thank Allyson for taking up this cause.”
Elaine Lewis, D.Hom., C.Hom.
Certified Homeopath
“Succinctly laid out, comprehensive guidebook and invaluable resource you’ll wish YOUR Mom had. Allyson’s experience in treating common childhood ailments simply and easily will give you the tools you need to succeed. Just add the inexpensive and easily obtained remedies and you’re good to go!”
Laurie J. Willberg
“This is an excellent book filled with practical natural suggestions for parents with children. She has many different therapy suggestions for each illness and this helps parents solve their children’s issues in a timely fashion with the natural products that they have on hand. Feeling empowered as a parent is a strong calming influence at the moment of crisis AND  with this book you will be able to tackle your child’s dis-ease. Wonderful tips on fever as well as many parents grapple with the issue of what to do when a fever comes to their child.”
Domenic Stanghini DiHom(Pract) CEASE practitioner
“I have come to learn many things over the last few years about Natural medicine and I have seen the amazing results it produces. Having worked with Allyson through Hellkunist, I highly recommend having this, along with her other books as your personal “first-aid kit” for your children and family. I only wished these books were out when my babes were small. I will be keeping copies for my children for when they embark on parenthood. It is well written, well laid out and full of answers and support, it also allows you to trust your instincts, giving you all the tools needed and the expert knowledge to back it up. You won’t regret it and your children will be so much more healthy. Thank you again Allyson, you’re the best!!” ~ SL

The Physician’s Home Pharmacy

Over the time that you’re in Heilkunst Treatment, you’ll no doubt hear me speak of one healative natural remedy or another when acute issues flare up.  I decided to go through my home pharmacy and itemize all of its content for you so that you can ascertain what might be of benefit to you and your family.

As you no doubt know, these supplements aren’t going to cure your chronic illnesses, but will help to support your healing power while you’re en route to a deeper cure through your Heilkunst treatment.

While I’ve included images of the types of products we use in our own home, it is only a suggestion, as your local health food store may carry different brands.  The principle behind the supplement is more important than the brand that you use.  For a more comprehensive First Aid Homeopathy course, see our Webinar here.

  • Solé Brine –  is a miracle remedy derived from Himalayan Rock Salt that you prepare yourself.  Taken internally, it washes away infectious matter, keeps the body’s pH level at a healthy alkaline, and if bathed in, can eradicate skin issues.  See more details here.

  • Vitamin D3 Liquid Drops – If you can sunbathe for 20 minutes per day year round, chances are you won’t need a Vitamin D supplement.  However, for us, the winter months in Canada are dark and we need about 2,000 I/U a day to get our Vitamin D, in order to keep our immune function high and maintain healthy bones and teeth.

  • Vitamin C – helps regenerate healthy tissues and is high in antioxidants for promoting optimum immune function, prenatal, cardio, skin and ocular health.  Every morning, our smoothies contain a teaspoon of Vitamin C powder.

  • Kindervital:  This is an awesome supplement that I suggest for both children and the elderly.  Due to the fact that it comes in a liquid, it is naturally more easily absorbed into the system promoting health in those that may have a greater challenge deriving it from whole, raw organic foods.

  • Homeopathic Tissue Salts – Schusseler’s Cell Salts are a homeopathic mineral supplement, in low dose, that helps to build healthy bones and tissues in children.  They can help with teething simply by the breast-feeding mom taking them or dissolving one in water, or crushing one tablet into whatever your child is eating.

  • Probiotics – are stellar at keeping the gut flora at a healthy level in order to be able to fight off any flu bug or infection that may seek you out as a host.  If I’ve eaten or drank something that doesn’t wholly agree with me, I’ll double up on my probiotic intake for that day and I feel much better knowing that I can combat any adversary that tries to take up residence in my gut.

  • Iodine – The body no longer produces its own iodine, but it still requires it for healthy thyroid function.  Foods like dried seaweed and fish and seafood, particularly cod, contain high amounts of iodine and will help with fatigue and when weight loss is difficult.  To ascertain if your iodine level is sufficient or not, paint a 1 inch patch on the inside of your arm before bed with external use iodine.  If the patch is totally gone by morning, you may need to supplement with Lugol’s to bring your levels up to their normal function.  Ask your Heilkunst Practitioner more about this at your next session. Also, selenium is a necessary co-factor to assimilate iodine, which you can get from a couple of Brazil nuts daily.

  • Zinc – is vital for healthy vision, hair, nails, skin, smell, appetite, healthy enzymatic activity and immune function.   Zinc is the “happy” element that helps to calm and promote healthy levels of serotonin that keeps you feeling youthful.  Zinc promotes wound healing, protein synthesis, blood sugar control, weight loss and protection against yeast infections.  It also promotes mental alertness as well as sleep.  Zinc is not stored by the body and is depleted by alcohol, sugar consumption or sweating with working out.   You can easily test for zinc shortage by taking “The Zinc Challenge;” if the liquid tastes like water, you need zinc, if it tastes awful/medicinal, your levels are fine.  Supplementation should be considered with no taste or somewhere in between.

  • Fermented Foods – Personally, I’m crazy about fermented foods, thinking of them as regular supplements and pure pleasure.  I make our own raw goat’s milk kefir that goes into our shakes every day.  I also make Kombucha which is fermented black tea and raw cane sugar, which get’s completely consumed by the resident “Scoby”,  rendering a fizzy probiotic drink that easily replaces soda pop any day.  I also make kosher salt fermented dill pickles which we all love.  All raw fermented foods are considered “super-foods”,  supplying high levels of orgone energy (the stuff of life), cultured nutrition and gut healthy flora.

  • Coconut Oil – The health benefits of coconut oil include stress relief, maintaining cholesterol levels, increased immunity, proper digestion and metabolism, relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, diabetes, HIV, cancer, dental care, and bone strength due to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and its properties such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, soothing, etc.

  • Calendula Cream with Neem – Calendula is a homeopathic remedy derived from pot marigold (calendula officinalis) and is a premier healative for cuts, diaper rashes and eczema.  Neem is derived from the crushed seed of the Neem Tree and is high in Vitamin E and is also anti-microbial to promote healing.  Rhus tox. derived from Poison Oak is also the homeopathic remedy we use for rashes or eczema where there is much itching.

  • Aloe Plant – I have a couple of aloe plants in my kitchen window in case of burns or scalds.  Cantharis is also the homeopathic remedy for burns.

  • Nin Jiom Cough Syrup – On the rare occasion someone gets a cough or cold in our home, we’ve traditionally used Nin Jiom Cough Syrup and Ricola Natural Herb Cough Drops.  Eucalyptus essential oil (blended in a carrier oil) on the feet of your child can help,  as well as a vaporizer, with natural mint essential oil added near the steam vents, in their their room at night if the air if dry.

  • Essential Oils – I love my essential oils and while I have a whole shelf full of them, I’ll elucidate on a couple of my favorites here. I’ve already promoted the use of eucalyptus and mint when any one of us is suffering with cold-like symptoms, cough, or even just feeling kind of down that day.  I will put pure, natural mint oil in my water on my desk as it is a good pick-me up encouraging feelings of well-being in my clients.  I use lavender on my feet at night or on my pillow to help me transition easily into sleep. Rose is a great essential oil for anyone who is suffering a loss, sadness or disappointment.  Rubbed on the chest, it can do wonders.  Balsam is one of my personal favorites as it reminds me of camping in the forest with my Dad when I was a kid.  I find it so grounding, and calming and I will often rub it on my feet before settling into bed for the night. Keep in mind, most essential oils should be diluted into a carrier oil (olive oil is ideal) and not used full strength on the skin.

  • Bach Flower Remedy Kit (especially ‘Rescue Remedy’) – While we have access to hundreds of flower, tree, bush and sea essences world wide, ‘Rescue Remedy’ contains a few choice flower essences to help with shock or trauma in first aid situations by shifting the state of mind.

    • Impatiens: For those who act and think quickly, and have no patience for what they see as the slowness of others. They often prefer to work alone. Teaches empathy and understanding of and patience with others. We’ve found it very fast-acting in alleviating an impatient attitude and lowering stress.

    • Star of Bethlehem: For trauma and shock, whether experienced recently or in the past. Teaches the ability to recover from traumas and to integrate them into the present life.

    • Cherry Plum: For those who fear losing control of their thoughts and actions and doing things they know are bad for them or which they consider wrong. Teaches trust in one’s spontaneous wisdom and the courage to follow one’s path.

    • Rock Rose: For situations in which one experiences panic or terror.

    • Clematis: For those who find their lives unhappy and withdraw into fantasy worlds. They are ungrounded and indifferent to the details of everyday life. Teaches one to establish a bridge between the physical world and the world of ideas; may foster great creativity. Is also used to bring clarity and alertness to the present moment.*

*Description and image source here:

  • Arnica and/or Traumeel Cream – is a great salve to use on contusions or just sore, bruised, tired muscles, ligament, tendon or joint pain.  Because it contains Arnica, never use where there is open skin such as cuts or abrasions as it will cause it to fester. Calendula cream is more suited for that.

  • Homeopathic Remedies – While we have over 4,000 remedies at our disposal just because we’re in the biz., you would do well to either purchase a small kit from Helios as pictured below or start to accumulate some remedies as you go.

  • Arnica Montana for bruises

  • Rhus Tox for itchy, flaky rashes and joint pain

  • Ruta Grav. for tendon pain

  • Belladonna for high fevers with quick onset and sun burns

  • Calendula for cuts and abrasions

  • Aconitum for shock and thoughts that the patient may die

  • Apis for bee stings and swelling

  • Urtica Urens for stinging nettle-like rashes

  • Drosera, Spongia, Hepar Sulph and Rumex for coughs

  • Chamomilla for fussy babies who may be teething

  • Sol and Glonium for sunstroke

  • Bryonia and Natrum Mur. for headaches over the eyes

  • Homeoventalin for asthmatic symptoms

  • Tensor Supports:  We are a family of athletes.  My daughter rides horses competitively and my son is a Parkour aficionado.  We have tensor supports for wrist, knee, ankle, and neck just for intermediary support in the face of strains.

  • Experience Bowel Cleanser –  On occasion, it is prudent to cleanse the bowels with trusted herbal tinctures or to actually have a colonic with a trained professional, due to the fact that there can be 5-7 lbs of accumulated toxins in the colon that need to be cleansed from the body, especially if qualifying yourself for detox.  See here.

  • Clove Bud Oil – Over-the-counter teething gels are not FDA approved and can numb a baby’s gums and throat, potentially affecting breathing and swallowing.  Clove Bud Oil works just as well to numb the area.  See Mommypotamus’ full recipe here (do not use clove oil full strength on the gums).

The Change of the Teeth at Age Seven

Why do our teeth change over at about the age of seven from our baby to our “permanent” or adult teeth? Is it more than our body’s attempt at making a fashion statement? We could cite the structural issues, and the need for larger teeth to fill the space of our jaw, but there is a deeper reason related to our overall development, related to our 7-year cycles of development (birth to age seven; seven to fourteen; fourteen to twenty one, and so on).

The changing of the teeth is an outward, physical marker, of an inner change and phase of development, when we are shifting from the primary focus being on the development of our physical body, to the development of our etheric body. The beginning of puberty close to age 14, for example, represents the next shift from the etheric into the development of the astral body. Likewise, at birth, the baby separates from the mother’s physical body, and then at the changing of the teeth, he or she has separated from the mother’s etheric body.

The changing of the teeth represents one of many specific stages of separation of the child from the parents, and the progressive development and expression of a unique individuality which is different from the genetic inheritance in the family. The goal of healthy development, from this point of view, is not to simply be a “chip off the old block”, but a fully developed individual. The baby teeth, then, come from the family genetics, and the adult teeth are a by-product of the emerging individuality of the child.

The graduation of a child from Kindergarten to grade one is partly determined by the timing of their change in teeth, amongst other markers which indicate that they are sufficiently mature for the next phase of the curriculum.

The process of individuation is life-long, and many critical phases and markers emerge through childhood of this process being on track. The job of parenting, it is said, is the most challenging and the most rewarding, and involves many progressive stages of “letting go” on the part of the parents. The deeper that a parent goes through Heilkunst treatment, the more easily they are able to appropriately let go at various stages along the way.

Armoring of the Oral Segment

This blog is part of a series; its original title was Heilkunst Basics : University, 3rd Year (Armoring of the Oral Segment)

As we have a look through the specific characteristics of each of the seven segments, you should always keep in mind the general principles which explain what armoring is, and how it functions. One of these points relates to the idea of chronic contraction, which is the pathological form of the usual healthy version of continual expansion and contraction functioning together. This is why Reich began his exploration of the segments using a version of “trigger point” therapy, where he would press on a chronically contracted muscle in order to encourage it to release, and return to its natural function of expansion/contraction.

Descending down to the next segment below the ocular, I’ll examine the oral segment today. The first clue to an armored oral segment is either a facial expression which seems ‘glued on’, or one which is incongruent with the emotion which the person is currently expressing. Another interesting incongruence to watch for is when the ocular and oral segments are expressing different emotions at the same time (eg. sad eyes with a smile).

An armored oral segment will produce physical symptoms including the grinding of the teeth at night, or clenching during the day. People who compulsively or unconsciously lick their lips constantly, or are always chewing on something, such as their fingernails, or the plastic cap of a pen, are also displaying a blockage to the oral segment. Any number of oral addictions may be suffered, such as to food, alcohol, cigarettes, or oral sex. The pervasive obsession with breasts in our society is also a sign of how widespread this oral blockage is, and how many people are still longing to receive proper love and nurturing for their proper oral development.

The vocal quality may also be noticeably affected. Characteristics such as a vocal timbre which is ‘thin’ or otherwise unpleasant to listen to, such as an overly nasal quality are also signs of this blockage, as well as when the patient’s speech is either too soft or loud, or they are extremely talkative or non-talkative. One adjunct to treatment which can be very effective here is to arrange for the patient to have singing lessons. The training in proper breathing from a voice coach is also invaluable to the entire de-armoring process.

Other therapeutic exercises which can be applied, as appropriate, include : encourage suckling, such as through a straw or through a baby bottle; gently invoke the gag reflex by pushing a toothbrush to the back of the throat (this also helps to release the next segment, which is the cervical); aggressive biting down, and growling. Something soft, such as a towel, can be used to cushion the bite; the homeopathic remedy ‘Lachesis’, which is very useful for an excess amount of energy discharged through talking, and often with a sarcastic or ‘biting’ tone; the flower essence of ‘trumpet vine’, which can help to imbue warmth and confidence into the patient’s speech patterns.

Treating a Fever With Belladonna

When I wrote my blog on Belladonna, as used as a deeper chthonic remedy, I first contextualized it in terms of its common usage as a remedy for very hot fevers in children. A reader of this blog picked up on this point, and asked a very excellent question:

“I was just wondering. If belladonna is given to a child with fever, will the organic response to the remedy be an increase in temperature?”

There is probably no topic more anxiety-provoking to a parent of young children, than the issue of how to safely and effectively treat a fever. The greater the parent’s education, the more they understand the negative consequences of suppressing a fever, however the fear remains about the potentially damaging effects a fever could have on their child.

The action of a homeopathic remedy is two-fold : First there is the initial action, and that is followed by the healing reaction. As in the principle in physics of every action having an opposite but equal reaction, the two actions of the homeopathic remedy have this same sort of pattern. In acute diseases, such as intense fevers, it is the initial action which is much more prominant and visible in the action of the remedy, in contrast to long-term, slow moving chronic illness, it is much more the healing reaction which is experienced by the patient.

The initial action occurs almost immediately upon taking the remedy, and it is the moment in time where the energy of the disease is augmented by the energy of the remedy. Remember that the homeopathic remedy is given on the basis of the law of similars, meaning that the disease and the remedy are very much alike. As in the forestry practice of ‘fighting fire with fire’, the initial action is that moment where the planned fire comes into contact with the wild fire, and there is a temporary flare-up of the flames.

This leads us to the answer to our question, which is that for a temporary span of time (usually seconds or minutes, and in rare cases hours), the original disease symptoms will increase. In the case of a Belladonna-like disease, this may include the redness and heat of the skin, the delirium, and the vivid and palpable sensation of heat upon touching the patient’s skin. The actual thermometer temperature may or may not change at this point.

The question behind this question is getting at the concern for causing any undue harm to the child by increasing the fever. As I just pointed out, the actual thermometer temperature may or may not temporarily increase in a given case. More importantly, however, is not the issue of the temperature, in terms of a quantitative measure, but what is happening at a qualitative level in such a scenario.

To go back to the principle of similars, we need to remember that this is nature’s law of cure, and that there is an important distinction to be made between a disease state itself, and its symptoms. Giving Belladonna is addressing the disease state itself, which is the real thing to be concerned about. The fever and other symptoms are not the disease, but rather the body’s visible struggle with the disease. While a fever does need to be respected, and carefully observed, it is ultimately only a secondary aspect of this whole phenomenon. The fact that the body has the capacity to mount such a strong defence, and that it may be temporarily augmented by the initial action of the remedy is a sign of a very healthy immune system. This is a critically important point for helping parents switching their thinking from a quantitative way of looking at this phenomenon, to a more qualitative way.

Teething Tablets

Hyland’s Homeopathic Teething Tablets are ranked number one in Google when you search on “Teething Tablets”. I get really excited when I see this and the parents’ testimonials of praise and thanks as this promotes the natural curative art and science I so love. I would like to have a chat about Hyland’s Teething Tablets this month and tell you why the ingredients actually work. I will also start by telling you why a babe might suffer teething issues in the first place.

Teeth are no different from bones or the formation of the head and skull. If a person is struggling with symptoms with their teeth, we can generally find issues also in the muscleo-skeletal system in general. Unlike the allopathic model of patient treatment, we wholistic Heilkunst practitioners don’t divide the body up into unrelated parts and then try to treat them in isolation. This makes no logical sense.  Like the old song, the shin bone is connected to the knee bone, our bodies don’t do much in isolation of itself.

So if a babe is struggling with building teeth, we want to know why and how this phenomena relates on other levels of their whole being. Rudolf Steiner, spiritual scientist, says that teeth formation can not occur without Magnesia Phosphorica, Calcera Florica, Calcera Phosphorica and Calcera Sulphurica, Natrum Muriaticum, Silicea, Lime, and Calcera Carbonica. Essentially teeth and bones are just a structured repository of salt and mineral deposits based on a divine blueprint. So if there is a shortage, we want to know why and then what to do about it. Right?

Teething can be a struggle if not enough minerals are available for the purpose of construction. Its a little like not having enough bricks delivered to the work-site to complete a house. A babe with a  Homeopathic Constitution such as Calcerea Carbonica or Silicea can have a tough time with dentition as they need more Calc. and Silicea available to them as building blocks. Shocks and traumas in utero, at birth or even the vaccines can stunt growth and the capacity for easy dentition as the life force cycles, dedicated to patterns of disease as opposed to growth. A genetic predisposition to Syphilis can compromise an infant’s capacity for easy dentition and bone development with caries, facial deformations, and loose teeth that crack or up-root easily.

Some babes will cut teeth without an ounce of drooling or complaint, while a sibling can suffer sleepless nights, inflamed gums and enough soaked bibs, so wet they can be wrung out at the end of the day. This was true about my own children. My son Jordan was born two month’s premature and didn’t cut his first tooth until after his first year. It was excruciating for him and each tooth brought a another ear-ache, antibiotics, and 2 winters with pneumonia. It was a vicious cycle and one we were very happy to break it outright with Heilkunst medicine. You can read about it in my book, The Path to Cure: The Whole Art of Healing.
